On this day in 1932, Amelia Earhart took off for Ireland to become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. As new technology for radio and navigation was developed, Earhart continued to fly strictly by instinct. While working to improve her aviation skills, she and her husband planned a solo flight across the Atlantic. In 1932, they announced that on the fifth anniversary of Charles Lindbergh’s across the Atlantic, Amelia would attempt the same. English astronomer Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer was born on this day in 1836. In 1869, Lockyer was one of the first scientists and to detect the element that he named helium in the Sun’s atmosphere.
