Just had a tour of the @brooklynbrewery 🍻and got a sneaky bit of design history during the tour. When founded in 1988 the two owners of the brewery wanted the best designer in NYC to create the logo. They approached none other than legendary designer ~ Milton Glasser. Milton's consultancy fee at the time was about 30k they only had 100k to create the business. So they asked Milton to design the logo for free. But first they had to get past his secretary. One of the partners called the secretary day after day and slowly made friends with her. Eventually she put him through to Milton and finally they got their 15 minute meeting with Milton.
They brought three cases of their new beer to the meeting and Milton thanked them but said he can't do it for free. They insisted he at least try the beer before they left. Three hours later and with all the beer in their bellies, Milton finally agreed on two conditions. 1/ he becomes a partner in the brewery and 2/ he gets free beer for life. ...free beer for life. 👍
A week later Milton revealed the logo. The owners hated it at first since he had changed the name from Brooklyn Eagle Brewery (named after a Brooklyn newspaper) to Brooklyn Brewery. After some time they came around and the rest is history.
Milton had been designing all collateral since then and but recently the design is done by Doyle Partners one of Milton's protégés from a while back.
Milton still gets free beer to this day. 💯
