The Svalbard reindeer are the smallest subspecies of the reindeer. It has lived for at least 5,000 years, and has become well adapted to the harsh climate. Saved from the brink of extinction by dedicated recovery programs, while they were hunt during the last century, these small reindeer have a dramatically variable birth rate.

Last summer at the edge of the pack ice. Our Schoner was such a beautiful boat. Thanks to her we were able to reach the best places in Nunavut, sail in the ice and seek for the wildlife. I will never forget this expedition! Looking for new project at sea, on a sailboat.

Walruses were once extremely abundant in the Svalbard Archipelago, but 350 years of unregulated harvest brought them to the brink of extinction before they were protected in 1952. At that time it was approximately 100 animals in Svalbard. Fortunately, today, Surveys on haul-out sites show that the number of walruses in Svalbard is increasing.

The breath of the largest animal ever has lived on earth. Blue whales measure up to 28 meters. They are only between 600 and 1500 roaming the high Arctic. Today I felt so lucky we could see this beautiful animal right next to the boat.

Dahlbreen glacier on the west coast of Svalbard as well retreats over the last 40 years. The land that we see in the middle was the terminal moraine a few years ago. The researcher observed that 14 glaciers had retreated from the ocean to the land over the last 30–40 year period.

Today, I am proud to announce to that I received the 3rd Prize Wildlife at The Nature Conservancy contest. Again this polar bear leaping ice is making a name for itself. The majestic beast Nanook (great traveler) has changed my life and point of view, making me engaged in protecting and conservancy of the Arctic.

A beluga whale's body is fusiform, but robust and stocky. Beluga lack a dorsal fin. Without a dorsal fin, they have less surface area for heat loss, and can more easily swim just below ice sheets to locate breathing holes.
They have a dorsal ridge that runs from just behind the midpoint of the back to the tail flukes.

Last winter Norway banned Oil companies to drill in Lofoten and Senja Islands, at least until the next election for parliament, which is due in 2021. But opposition is strong.
According to WWF, the water off Lofoten is a breeding area for 70 percent of all fish caught in Norwegian waters in the north.
I hope these Islands will become a Maritime Protected Area really soon to definitely banned oil companies risks.

Polar bears are strong swimmers; they swim across bays or wide leads without hesitation. They can swim for several hours at a time over long distances. They've been tracked swimming continuously for 100 km (62 miles). The longest distance covered by any polar bear in swimming is about 687km (427 miles). #Arctic #polarbear #greenland #nunavut #baffin #polar #Canada #conservation
