I asked my tour guide to take me to the favelas. Favelas are what people in Brazil consider to be the poorest and most dangerous neighborhoods. Most people don't realize that favelas were formerly quilombos--maroon communities of Africans who escaped slavery and revolted against the Portuguese. They may call it the slums but I call it power.βœŠπŸΎπŸ‡§πŸ‡·#TheRealBrazil β€’

And the wind...

Officially a graduate of the Ecela Spanish School in Peru! So proud of how far I've come. Learned so much Spanish and so many lessons in Peru. I'm truly going to miss it. πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ͺ β€’

Today at the beautiful Museo Nacional AfroPeruano I was thinking a lot about two things:
β€’The Peruvian girl I got into an argument with in middle school because she said there were no black people in Peru. I hadn't been yet but I knew in my heart my people were here. Her ignorance was a testament of the historic "eracism" and whitewashing of our history globally.
β€’The outright barbarism and demonic nature of slavery that our people endured in Peru and all over the world. The only thing that perplexes me more than the barbarism of Europeans and Anglo-Americans is the sheer ingenuity and resilience of black people globally. So proud to be black. It's a blessing and a privilege.✨

This is me sitting in first class for the first time. I'm not sharing this to brag. I'm not a materialistic person so I'd rather not spend my money on first class; we're all going to the same place any way lol. But the night before I took this flight, I got into a nightmare of a situation in Peru. On the way back from a day trip to another city, my bus driver literally refused to drop me off without paying a large amount of extra money. I was the last passenger so he tried to take advantage and rip me off. Of course I refused. Then he attempted to force me out of the bus in the middle of nowhere, without any way of contacting anyone or getting to my homestay. I refused and we argued until he finally agreed to drive me to my house. On the way, he got stopped by the police. While I was waiting on the bus, I overhear him lying and blaming me for whatever he got pulled over for. The cop starts walking over and I start to panic. I'm thinking to myself this cannot be happening!! So I think quick and decide to hop out of the bus and RUN. I literally ran in the middle of the night until I found a taxi. When I finally made it to my homestay I was so relieved and thankful because I know that situation could've ended up so much worse. I cried and I thanked God, Jesus, the ancestors, and all the saints for safely removing me from that crazy situation. The next day I somehow ended up in first class. Didn't book a first class flight. Didn't pay for a first class flight. Just ended up with one. And I must say it felt nice to know that I was again being reminded of my favor and blessings. No matter how far we go and where we end up, we're never alone.✨

You can tell a lot about a country by who/what the people name their streets, buildings, and cities after. Tupac Amaru (Tupac Shakur's namesake) was one of Peru's most important revolutionary leaders. In Quechua, the language of the Incas, Tupac means royal and Amaru means serpent which represents great wisdom. Very honored to have lived along this street while in Cuzco. I'd like to think some of this royal wisdom trickled down to me.βœŠπŸΎβ˜€οΈπŸ’™πŸŒˆ ✨
