This week’s #moving2live podcast episode featuring Part 2 of @reutebh interviewing Sam Callan is now available. Sam has a diverse background with a master's degree in exercise science (Georgia State University) along with a bachelor's degree in psychology (University of Georgia) and a master's degree in counseling and higher education
administration (Appalachian State University). While in
graduate school, Sam completed an internship with Jeff Galloway. Part of his internship involved coaching Jeff's "advanced" runners; these were runners who were seeking time goals such as qualifying for the Boston Marathon. After finishing graduate school at Georgia State, Sam worked as a
research assistant physiologist at the United States Olympic
Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. He later moved to
@usacycling as its sports science manager and later in charge of coaching education. While in Colorado Springs, Sam began coaching again with the Arthritis Foundation Joints in Motion marathon training program. He also has worked as a coach for USA Fit (Houston, TX) and with many individuals. Sam
combines his knowledge as a long time runner with his
knowledge of science and many years of educating coaches in a variety of sports to help runners reach their goals. Sam is currently the Senior Manager of Coaching Education for @usfencing .

A fall message from the labs of #FitLabPGH - take time to enjoy the crunch of leaves 🍁 under your feet (or paws)...make movement a priority! #labrador #chocolatelab #blacklab #labsofinstagram #moving2live #movement #mingocreekpark

Today’s #FitLabPGH Movement Tips and Lifestyle Hacks video was shot on the first frosty morning of the season in the Pittsburgh area. That didn't stop us from kicking off the day with the #labradors in Mingo Creek County Park, but we were delayed by a few minutes to dig out the appropriate layers! When it comes to staying warm when your feet might get damp, we're big fans of wool socks...our current favorites? Woolie Boolie by @defeet
If you're looking for advice on cold weather gear, we encourage you to support your local businesses. Struggling to find gear in your town? Try @rei or @backcountry for a wide variety of outdoor gear with good descriptions and reviews. With the proper gear, you can enjoy outdoor movement year-round...so do your homework (and shopping), then get outside, and get moving!
We hope this video inspires you to get outside, get moving, and shop local...we also hope you enjoy the music: Marathon Man by Jason Shaw from the album Audionautix: Acoustic, licensed under an Attribution 3.0 United States License. Available at www.FreeMusicArchive.org

In case you missed it...The latest #FitLabPGH podcast episode featuring @northparktrailrunners is now available! North Park Trail Runners (NPTR) is a fast-growing group of individuals who share a passion for trail running. They share this passion with the community through their weekly organized runs that are open to anyone. Additionally, NPTR volunteers at regional trail races and performs local trail-maintenance projects. Their home base is North Park, (located roughly ten miles north of Pittsburgh, in Allison Park, PA) but they frequently participate in events and races that span Pennsylvania and into Ohio. NPTR was founded in 2012 by Mark Knapp. What started out as a small group quickly grew, and by 2013, there were 400 members. Today, that number has grown to 1,600 members. In the spring of 2017, NPTR formed a Board of Directors and launched a public website and public Facebook page (in addition to the already existing
Closed Facebook Group). In July 2017, NPTR was granted
501(c)(3) status. FitLabPGH interviewed Matt Sudak,
President of NPTR, and Amy Nelson, who leads the Marketing efforts for the organization. Both Matt and Amy are members of NPTR’s Board of Directors.

Today’s #FitLabPGH Movement Tips and Lifestyle Hacks video brings you scenes from Saturday’s GearFest by @3riversoutdoorco in Schenley Plaza. It was an (unseasonably) beautiful 80 degree, blue-sky day in Pittsburgh. We kicked off the day with the #labradors in Mingo Creek County Park before visiting with past and future podcast guests at GearFest. Follow 3 Rivers Outdoor Co. as they work to open a brick-and-mortar hub for outdoor enthusiasts in the Pittsburgh area to exchange gear and information (and enjoy the occasional beer). As we get outside and explore new movement opportunities, we like to support our local businesses, several of which were manning vendor tables at GearFest, including: @steelcityslackers , @ascendpgh , True North Wilderness Survival School (all guests on the FitLabPGH Podcast), and @local5longboards & @livejaunt (potential future podcast guests???). If you're anything like the FitLabPGH team, you have more gear than storage...if that's the case, follow the new local venture @gearages by GearageWerks (www.gearages.com) for a potential storage solution...based on their prototype, FitLabPGH is already on the waitlist!
We hope this video inspires you to get outside, get moving, and shop local...we also hope you enjoy the music: Marathon Man by Jason Shaw from the album Audionautix: Acoustic, licensed under an Attribution 3.0 United States License. Available at www.FreeMusicArchive.org

We are ready to print #FitLabPGH t-shirts and we are looking for recommendations: 1) for a screen printing and embroidery business, preferably in Pittsburgh, with the graphic design skills to make some tweaks to our logo; and 2) for a super-soft “girl” cut t-shirt (the It’s Not Fair and @ascendpgh Ts are both Bella...but we’ve had a few t-testers tell us Bella t-shirts are cut too small across the chest). Any suggestions??? Share your recommendations in the Comments for a chance to win a FitLabPGH t-shirt (once we get them printed!)

The #FitLabPGH team ventured outside of South Hills exurbia in the last two days to visit with past and future podcast guests, including: Don Drolet of @standingcranetaichi ; - Larry Gioia of @dynamicpaddlers and @gearages ; and Erik Kulick of True North Wilderness Survival School. We visited with Larry and Erik while attending Gear Fest today (hosted by @3riversoutdoorco ), where we also saw podcast guests @ascendpgh @steelcityslackers - it was a beautiful day to be outside and moving in Pittsburgh!

Friday the 13th evening at #FitLabPGH HQ - restocking the inventory of running shoes (Junior cat Mia agrees it’s like an early Christmas!) and healthy snacks (pumpkin coconut breakfast cookies); getting in some resistance training; and topping it off with a little wine (sending our thoughts and prayers to everyone facing the fires in Northern California). Wishing you a wonderful weekend...get outside and make movement a priority! #movement #moving2live #pittsburgh #pittsburghfit #fitness #activelifestyle #podcast #episode #catslife #catsofinstagram #altrarunning #brooksrunning #pumpkin #murphygoode #napavalley #napawildfire #winetasting #fridaythe13th #dontpokethebear

In case you missed it...The latest #moving2live Podcast episode featuring Part 2 of @reutebh interviewing @woodultra is now available. Samantha Wood, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS, is a board-certified orthopedic physical therapist and serves in the @usarmyreserve . She coaches endurance athletes through Mito-Endurance
Coaching, LLC and operates a cash-based physical therapy practice, Natural Performance Rehab, LLC in Colorado Springs, CO. For fun Sam runs ultras and Spartan races. Most recently she was a contestant in season 2 of NBC's "Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge" and competes regularly with the All-Army Obstacle Course Racing team. In 2016 Sam finished the Leadville 100 Trail Run (part of the @ltraceseries ) wearing sandals.
Sam’s interview covers topics ranging from her education/career path and professional development to training tips for endurance athletes and coaches...and yes, she tells us how and why she transitioned to running in sandals! Today’s #FitLabPGH Movement Tips and Lifestyle Hacks video brings you scenes from last Saturday’s Pittsburgh StepTrek in the South Side Slopes. It was a fabulous fall Movement challenge supporting the @slopesassoc in their efforts to preserve the public steps (and other public spaces) in their neighborhood. If you haven’t explored the slopes, check out the Church Route on the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association website - it’s a permanently-signed, self-guided walking tour with great views and interesting history. While you’re exploring, don’t miss South Side Park, where you can forget you’re only steps away from city streets. Message from the video: take time to have fun and play...while being aware of your surroundings (don’t let your fun impede someone else’s walk/run/ride). Have a great Friday and make movement a priority this weekend!
We hope this video inspires you to get outside and move...we also hope you enjoy the music: Marathon Man by Jason Shaw from the album Audionautix: Acoustic, licensed under an Attribution 3.0 United States License. Available at www.FreeMusicArchive.org
