31 teams signed up for a chance to catch monster Kingfish in Key West. Teams ranged from local Key West to Alabama and Georgia. They all had one thing in common, a vision to win in the first SKA event of the year hosted by Meat Mayhem.
The first boat to the scales was Team Spiced Rum lll, Capt. Bill Wummer. The team scaled 2 fish over 50 pounds, with the largest being 52.2. What a start to the day and season for the long time SKA team. Next to hit the scales was Preferred Marine Fishing Team Capt. Kody Beattie out of Ft Lauderdale, who scaled a massive 57.6. The lead was short lived for Kody and crew as Set 4 Life, Capt. Louis Arrazola posted a 58.6. The first-place fish was knocked for a 4th time when Capt. Ozzie Fischer and his team on the Xtended Play came in just 15 minutes later with a gigantic 62.4-pound King. This was truly Kingfish Mayhem! Anticipation and excitement built around the weigh in site as more teams came into the marina to weigh. Capt. Steve Sprague and Team Tuppen's Marine/Garmin had everyone’s attention when they unveiled their catch from the day. A hush fell over the crowd as Tournament Director Jimmy Wickett watched the scale and announced “59.2!” Just short of the lead but Team Tuppens/Garmin was thrilled with the top SKA fish from Day 1. Including Tuppens 59.2 there were 5 fish over 50 weighed after Xtended Play hung the 62. A total of 8 fish over 50 for the SKA teams on day 1.
13 boats checked out on Day 2 with a big number to beat. One team did just that. Capt. Billy Delph from Beach Marine Products and team of Teddy Beach and Travis Holeman as Team Beach Marine accomplished the mission. They reported making a long run that did not pay off on day 1, but they found a small pod of bait on Day 2 that was holding Kings, and some big ones! The crowd waited for Jimmy to make the announcement… “65.2” They had done it. Congratulations to Team Beach Marine! We can’t wait to see you all very soon along the Tournament Trail! Tight lines, See You at the Scales!
