femmescapes  presenting work on queer + trans affinities with femmeness ✨

we are 💕delighted💕 that @xxrayferreiraxx has joined us as an editor on our next issue — but first catch her performing at the bk museum on thursday at 7! ✨ “Immerse yourself in new and recent work by contemporary Latinx artists as they respond to themes in our exhibition Radical Women: Latin American Art, 1960–1985. Our three-day series Cuerpxs Radicales (taking place July 5, 12, and 19) showcases female-identified and gender-nonconforming Latinx artists in the greater NYC area who are exploding rigid notions of femininity. Featuring performance, visual art, literature, music, and everything in between, it centers a younger generation engaging with our current political and cultural landscape” and then again at The Glove 7/20 8-10 for UNAPOLOGETIC: an evening of performance, noise, and words organized by lorene bouboushian 💫

cruisin into providence tomorrow for the @qtzfest with qt zine kids @moon.mansion @wolf_hour @jinjavitis @neonsigh and @fungusboy 🍑🍑🍑 come see us saturday from 11-4! plus readings!

Thrilled to share that we’re supporting femme artists and writers @lv_loveless @chloeandsuchas and @hotdumbslutv2 with microgrants towards continued work on their projects in photography and writing. Here’s Ella Loveless on her series of self-portraits: “Being raised as a Chicanx, I have internalized a lot of shame from both religion and machismo. I would like to push myself further to explore that feeling of being an outsider, to reclaim it in a visually striking way.... I want to show the tension, the balance, the pain and the beauty of being a dyke who is trans.” Thanks to @bkartscouncil for making this support of femme art possible ✨✨✨

Our last post of a Laura Aguilar photograph got reported 🙄 let’s try this one (Grounded #111, 2006) *
Remembering Laura Aguilar. Go read the beautiful @chegossett essay in @frieze_magazine on “what queer brown and Black and fat embodiment does to shift, gently and powerfully like an undercurrent, how we think about the parameters of the natural and unnatural, subject and object, human and non-human.”

new books from our brilliant contributors Reina Gossett and @heyteebs come recommended in the new confusion issue of @maskmagazine : “liminal space heard what you said and she’s pissed” http://www.maskmagazine.com/the-confusion-issue/life/recommendations 💫💫💫

APPLY FOR A MICROGRANT AND PUBLICATION IN FEMMESCAPES!

Femmescapes is a print magazine collecting visual and written work by queer and trans people who experience an affinity with femmeness. It opens space for writers and artists to explore their relationship to femininity or femmeness and put their work conversation with others. We publish work engaging femmeness/femininity both directly and indirectly, on the systemic (including police violence, mass incarceration, migrant justice, global fascism) as well as the intra- and interpersonal levels.

This year, we’ve been awarded a Brooklyn Arts Council grant! A new aspect of the project that this has made possible is a small fund of up to $200 for a femme/feminine trans and/or queer artist or writer who needs monetary support to complete their work. We know wealth and financial stability affect opportunities to make art and publish it, and we want to support someone who needs monetary breathing room to create, complete, or document their work.

For our past three issues, we’ve operated through solicitations, but we would like to open up submissions for this microgrant.
To apply, email femmescapesthezine @ gmail dot com and include: -Artist Bio
-Website and/or links to your work available online
-Description of the work
-Documentation or excerpts of the piece(s)
-Explanation of how much money you are requesting (up to $200) and how you would use the funds: buying materials, paying a photographer to document a performance, paying for medical care, paying rent -- anything! (This explanation will be kept confidential).
-Any information you want to share about your identities or positionality. We will prioritize submissions by trans women, trans femmes, low-income people, and people of color.

Please send your submission by Saturday, May 5th.

If it is accepted, we may offer feedback on the work. The artist or writer(s) who receive funds will commit to submitting their finalized work by Sunday, June 1st.
We look forward to hearing from you!
