Looking for an awkward comedy? Then check out the Oscar nominated ‘Lars and the Real Girl,’ which features one of Ryan Gosling’s very best performances.

2018 has been a fantastic year for documentaries. From Bing Liu’s personal and beautiful ‘Minding the Gap,’ to RaMell Ross’s startlingly poetic ‘Hale County This Morning, This Evening,’ we have seen documentaries that not only inform us of the people and places that color our world, but we have seen movies that have given us insight into the human condition.
Added to this list of amazing documentaries is ‘Science Fair,’ the documentary by directors Cristina Constantini and Darren Foster that details the journey of an international group of high school students competing in the most intense Science Fair ever. It’s funny, quirky, inspiring, and absolutely moving—a sentiment shared by audiences at Sundance, who awarded the film the Overall Audience Award at this year’s festival. The directors were good enough to sit down with Fandor to talk about the kids of the movie and what it was like directing their first feature documentary. Head to Fandor to read our full interview with the directors.

A moving and vivid drama by Canadian director Xavier Dolan, the gorgeously shot ‘Laurence Anyways’ won Best Canadian Feature at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. Dolan captures couple Laurence and Fred’s relationship as it evolves while Laurence transitions from man to woman. It is set in the 90s (offering plenty of back-on-trend sartorial inspiration) and features both an epiphanic score and memorable, masterful performances by Melvil Poupaud as Laurence and Suzanne Clément, whose portrayal of Fred garnered her the impressive Un Certain Regard Award for Best Actress at Cannes.

The most complete, newly restored version of Nicholas Ray's experimental masterpiece, made with his students at the State University of New York at Binghamton, ‘We Can’t Go Home Again’ embodies Ray's approach to filmmaking as a communal way of life. The film records Ray's groundbreaking use of multiple image as a way of telling more than one story simultaneously and of colorization as a way to heighten emotional expression. He called it a "journalistic" film, one that shares the anthropologists' aim of recording the "history, progress, manners, morals and mores of everyday life" at a critical moment in American history. Ray plays himself in the film, serving as mentor, friend and reference point around whom the students' stories constellate.

Tom Hardy belongs to a rare breed of actors. To put it simply, he is the best of both worlds: He has the handsome star quality that makes him ideal for giant blockbusters, magazine covers, and merchandising opportunities galore, and the theatrical eccentricity and acting chops for arthouse and prestige cinema. #bornonthisday

"Beautifully photographed by regular Wes Anderson collaborator Robert Yeoman (in his first DP credit), this earthy debut from indie veteran Alexandre Rockwell follows a makeshift family of eccentrics on the road in New Mexico. Though 'Hero' won a Special Jury Prize at the U.S. Film Festival (later rechristened Sundance), it has been unseen for decades—until now." — @factory_25

Wong Kar-Wai's visually stunning, tough and romantic 1988 first feature deftly smuggles the director's now celebrated genius into an incendiary "Heroic Bloodshed" street opera of the John Woo mold.

For this film master director Patricio Guzmán, famed for his political documentaries travels ten thousand feet above sea level to the driest place on earth, the Atacama Desert, where atop the mountains astronomers from all over the world gather to observe the stars. The sky is so translucent that it allows them to see right to the boundaries of the universe. The Atacama is also a place where the harsh heat of the sun keeps human remains intact: those of Pre-Columbian mummies; nineteenth century explorers and miners; and the remains of political prisoners, "disappeared" by the Chilean army after the military coup of September, 1973. So while astronomers examine the most distant and oldest galaxies, at the foot of the mountains, women, surviving relatives of the disappeared whose bodies were dumped here, search, even after twenty-five years, for the remains of their loved ones, to reclaim their families' histories. Melding the celestial quest of the astronomers and the earthly one of the women, 'Nostalgia For the Light' is a gorgeous, moving, and deeply personal odyssey.

A haunting Turkish noir from Nuri Bile Ceylan.

"Steve Buscemi, who plays Tommy and also wrote and directed the film, knows about alcoholism from the inside out and backward, and his movie is the most accurate portrait of the daily saloon drinker I have ever seen." — Roger Ebert
