I haven’t been able to regularly workout in two months (long story) and it has made it so hard to get back into the routine of taking care of myself. It’s reminded me of everything it took to start this journey in the first place. So, instead of saying “it’s easy” or even making it LOOK easy - I want to say this
1. It’s hard to change ANYTHING habitual in your life.
2. You can’t be hard on yourself. You have to give yourself patience and grace to start anything new.
3. You can’t change it all at once. It takes baby steps to change your habits. It takes time to create a “new normal”. 4. The mental and physical benefits of a good diet and regular exercise routine are SO INCREDIBLE! Depression and anxiety started making a comeback. I was like “why do I want to roll into a hole?” - then I made my way back into a regular healthy routine and all those thoughts/feelings started to fade.
Do it for you, babies!

I took a lot of goofy “before” pictures because I knew that it was my day of change. I decided that day to stop hiding from mirrors, to stop sucking in, and to finally say hello to the body I was living in. I got a good laugh out of my poses and told myself that it was going to be a long journey, but I was ready! I lost 20 lbs in my first two months with no exercise, only diet change. I lost another ten in the third month by adding lightweight cardio/lifting once my eating patterns had become a normal part of my life.
It took steps in the form of habits. Creating habits one goal at a time. It wasn’t an overnight “ALRIGHT ONLY LETTUCE AND RUN 100 MILES EVERYDAY!” That’s the fastest way to get yourself to NOT succeed. It’s small steps, small life adjustments, in the moment decisions, long term that make a difference. There’s two and a half years between these photos.... that’s almost 1000 nights.... so no I didn’t change overnight. You won’t change overnight, but that doesn’t mean you won’t or you can’t and it shouldn’t discourage you, but INSPIRE YOU because there is hope. I’ve been creating little videos in my highlight section that cover advice, experience, and lessons I’ve learned. Maybe one will help you out! (Or a friend! Send them my way). It’s not about pleasing others. It’s not about being better than others. It’s about being your best self FOR yourself. That is hard to do without a foundation of self-esteem which is something I’ve struggled with for my entire life. Just remember that the same way you want the best for your friends, your friends also want the best for you. Learning to be a friend to yourself is great place to start for building that foundation of self-esteem and love. Give yourself grace, patience, and love the same way you give those things to your friends. Keep harsh words about yourself out of your mouth. Keep demeaning thoughts about yourself out of your head. Positive words and positive thoughts help like thoughts and words grow. It’s like a garden in your mind where positivity can grow if you start to plant it. 🔥
Remember why you started. Remember your motivation. 🔥

MY THREE FAVORITE MACHINE BASED ABDOMINAL EXERCISES. These have been my go-to for two and a half years. 🔥

1. Cable crunches
Make sure you are TIGHTENING YOUR CORE THE WHOLE TIME and crunch. I’ll usually find a weight I can do 25 reps on and go for 3-4 sets.

2. Captain’s chair leg/knee raises
It’s easy to use the wrong muscles for this. If your lower abs aren’t hurting then try again! Curl that butt up and lift those knees. Once you can pound out 3 sets of 15 reps with knees at an even pace try straightening out your legs! Lift from side to side to engage your obliques too!

3. Cable Wood choppers
These will work your seratus and obliques hard. Be ready to grunt and groan. Tighten and twist. Don’t rely too much on your arms! I usually do 3 sets of 14 reps EACH SIDE!

Having a strong core I foundational in every aspect of physical freakin living. It will improve how much you can lift, run, walk, talk, smile, dance, hang out, exercise, breakdance, yo-yo, train Pokémon, and laugh at memes.
Don’t focus ONLY on the front though, you’ve got to balance out your core - so make sure you do some back exercises.

It’s EASY for me to look at all the fitness trainers I follow and not think twice about them posting a photo or video of themselves posing and flexing. But for me, someone who has been too insecure to take their shirt off around people for literally their entire life.... its another story. I’m pretty sure I can count on both hands the number of times I’ve taken my shirt off around people. Simultaneously learning to accept myself for who I am and getting fit has began to set me free from those insecurities. TO CLARIFY - It’s the self acceptance part that really started to give me peace and freedom IN SO MANY AREAS OF MY LIFE, the fitness part just became part of the way I learned to love myself. So you, if you’re reading this and you have physical insecurities - I want you to 1. Not hide. 2. Be a friend to yourself by accepting you for who you are right now in this moment. And 3. Smile and realize that EVERYONE HAS INSECURITIES and more often than not it’s things that people don’t even notice (I have blotchy pores on my legs and I would try anything I could to make them go away. Guess what - no one has ever said a damn thing about them! And I don’t stress about it because GUESS WHAT no one is perfect. The unique things about each of us makes life EXCITING, DYNAMIC, and COLORFUL!) 🔥🔥🔥
But if you want to make a change - it starts with being a friend to yourself by offering yourself the patience, love, and acceptance you’d offer a friend.

I was at my heaviest in January 2016. I had become an alcoholic who ate whatever I wanted just to cope with my depression and anxiety. I wasn’t always that person. Growing up I was a creative person and musician (I still am). I was adventurous and competitive and fun loving, but I had become defeated and bitter. I hated myself. I hated seeing myself in the mirror. I was my own worst enemy in every way. I woke up one morning in January 2016 and decided it was time to not just learn to LOVE MYSELF, but LIKE MYSELF. I realized that I had become someone who would do anything for their friends, but wouldn’t even lift a finger for myself. This is where my simple idea of Do It For You came from. Treat yourself the way you’d treat your best friend - with love, patience, acceptance, forgiveness, grace, and honesty. #DiFy isn’t limited to just exercise, but can exist throughout your whole life. Being a friend to myself helped me lose 55lbs and get in the best shape of my life. I studied nutrition and exercise. I started sleeping better. I found balance in my mental health. Ended yesterday with some light weight / high rep bent dumbbell rows. This exercise builds strength in your traps and lats (also hitting your delts and a few others). Building strength in your upper back/shoulders and specifically between your shoulders (scapular area) will rescue your posture. I played video games, worked on the computer, and played piano my whole life so my posture was a mess until my mid 20’s. Imagine your chest is a rubber band and behind your shoulders is a rubber band. If the front rubber band is stronger it’ll pull your shoulders and head forward. You’ve got to balance the strength between the front and back (this is true throughout your body. Like balancing abs with lower back. Bet you didn’t know that!). Also, hitting your lats will help you get that v shaped upper body.
