I’ve taken some time to reflect on the second most important day of my life. I’ve had a hard time posting about it because I get choked up every time I try to find the words to express my gratitude, love and joy for the man, the myth and the legend, Walt Disney and the magical day that we put together to commemorate his life.
My flame and I moved back to Arizona a few days ago but before leaving, we wanted to experience as many things as we could that have been on our bucket and favorite locations list. Disneyland was originally on the top of my list, but instead we decided to take a day to drive around the Los Angeles area to all of Walt Disney’s historical locations. On September 30th, we went to visit Walt’s Barn, which used to be located at the last home that he built in Beverly Hills. This home was Walt’s dream home and housed his 1/8th scale working train that him, his family and his friends would ride. The Barn has since been relocated to Griffith Park by his daughter Diane after he passed. We got to go to the Griffith Park Carousel where Walt sat on the benches as he watched his daughters ride the merry-go-round while he first dreamed of Disneyland. There are only three of these benches left in existence. One of the benches is located behind a fence for viewing only at the Griffith Parks Carousel. We were lucky enough to meet the owner of the Carousel who let us go behind the gate to sit on the bench and see how everything worked. We went to the many different homes of Walt, Roy and Lillian as well as many of the studios throughout the Los Angeles area where Walt worked. Lastly, we ended at Walt, Lillian and Sharon’s (his other daughter) final resting place.
I’m still in awe of how humbling the experience was and I’m so thankful that I had the opportunity to have my flame by my side through it all. I’m looking forward to finding more locations for future California visits.
I filmed and took a lot of photos and am planning on posting a video from that day. My goal is to have it completed and posted on December 5th, Walt Disney’s birthday.
