Emmalee P | Alberta, Canada  | Life is beautiful, these are some of its moments |

Well, I am officially in Ontario and working on our off-grid cottage to move in. I have some exciting news that I will post to my story today! Along with some cottage updates. 😍 Who recognizes this shot from my recent hike? (Hint, it’s in a saved story on my profile 😉)

This. This right here is why we will be back. A 2 hour drive to this? Yup... Only 2 more days until we are officially on our way to Ontario and I am already feeling homesick. I am glad that we have been presented with this opportunity to take a step back and really appreciate the little things. I will be updating you guys every step of the way! The good and the bad. So for those of you are curious what it looks like to spend a winter with no running water and electricity.... stay tuned 😉 .⠀

Because I suck at editing all of my photos right when I take them, I’m constantly going back and editing things that I took months and sometimes over a year ago! 😳 That’s what happened with this guy. I was out in the mountains during the crazy fires, you could barely see the mountains from all the smoke. I wanted to capture my favourite part of highway 11. This is the most notorious part of this highway. You have just arrived at Abraham Lake and are juuuuust getting into one of the most beautiful drives of all time. Have you been here? .⠀

There is something about a forest that calms the soul. I think it’s the sounds of the forest. Have you ever taken a minute to stop and listen? I know that my mind is always going 100 miles a minute, but it’s important to remember to stop and take a minute for yourself. Close your eyes, listen to all the sounds of the forest. Breathe ❤️ .⠀

Push yourself and you will be surprised. This is not something I would normally do. My brain takes over and I think that I’m being “sensible”, when really I’m not. I chose a “hard” level hike for my last one in Alberta before the move. I’m not in the excellent shape, nor have I ever been to the gym. But recently I’ve been surprised at how capable my body is when I let go of my mind. I wanted to prove to myself that I can go outside of my perceived “ability”. And so we did. We started out and immediately got lost. We spent the first hour scrambling up a shale edge and bushwhacking to try and find the trail. After we finally found it, it got harder. And once we thought the hard part was over, it got even harder. At one very steep point, I was taking 3-4 seconds in between each step from lack of oxygen. But we kept going. We finally made it to a point where we could see the summit, and then realized how far away we still were. After seeing a couple go up what looked like a straight cliff, we decided to go around and climb the false summit. Boy was that a bad idea. We scrambled next to a cliff, where every step could send you sliding down to your death. After many stops with trying to focus on climbing and not looking down, we made it. And then found a memorial for someone who died a month ago in that same spot. Realization hit quickly with the gusts of winds. So this is me yesterday. Out of breath, shaky legs, but proud that I pushed not only my body but also my mind to concentrate and focus when it needed to. Here’s to everyone who thinks that they can’t do something. You can. Elevation 2,530M (please don’t attempt this without hiking boots, layers, lots of water and snacks)

The classic Moraine Lake shot. My house is roughly 4 hours from this location, so when thinking of leaving the house at 2am to get here for 6, we decided to leave the night before. Waking up in the mountains is a wonderful feeling. The mountains were completely covered by fog, nevertheless we hiked up the rockpile and found a nice rock to sit on while we waited for the fog to lift. The sun started to peek out and illuminate the peaks, so I set up my tripod and went for the classic shot. As you can see my butt is all dirty from sitting on the ground, my hair is a crazy mess, but nothing gets in the way of one of my favourite views in Alberta. 🙌🏼 .⠀

Hiking is something that shows me how impressive our bodies really are. And also a good reminder of how powerful our minds are. I only just started hiking a couple of years ago, and only just recently started pushing myself. I am always in awe when I see how much my body can do, when my mind tells me I can’t. Every single one is like clockwork for me. I research the hike, get all excited. Get there and start the incline and start hating my life. My mind tells me that this is too difficult and “why the hell are you doing this” but after a half hour or so, I get into a nice pace and breathe through it. After roughly an hour of hiking, the pooled adrenaline and cortisol that sits in my blood from anxiety has all burned off and I start to feel this high sort of feeling. And then, next thing you know, you are already there. And you made it. Your mind told you that you can’t, but your body is so much more capable than you think. I’ve signed myself up for the last official hike I do before I leave, and it’s going to be the hardest yet. Am I scared? YUP! But I know that if I take my time, I’ll get there.... eventually! .⠀

Different perspectives change everything. Take this classic gorgeous waterfall such as crescent falls. It’s a true beauty, but after seeing the same shot time and time again, one begins to become bored. I feel like that’s the same as life. Things may seem boring or stagnant to you, but then it is up to you to find a new perspective ☺️❤️ This was shot on my Nikon D7100 with a Nikon 10-24mm lens. .

This was taken a couple weeks ago when it was still very smoky in the mountains. Crescent falls is a quick easy hike with gorgeous views such as this. When we were down there, you could barely see the sky because of the smoke and clouds. To the naked eye, it was all white. This photo originally just looked like the sky was all blown out. I took it into Lightroom to make a couple tweaks, and when toned down the highlights, this creepy colour appeared! I was shocked that my camera was able to grab that colour out of the sky that I couldn’t even see myself. I threw a graduated filter on the sky to bring some more of that colour out. I then realized that I was picking up on the faint colour of the smoke mixing with the clouds. So as you look at this creepy out of this world photo, think about all the people and animals who were affected by the fires this year. My heart goes out to all of you ❤️. . .

After my very personal, and very long post the other day, I had an idea of creating a specific part on my website on mental health. But taking it further than just my story. More into coping and strategies that I have learned along the way. Let me know if this is something that you think might help you? You can comment, or DM me directly. ⠀
The picture you are looking at, is from last winter. On our way back from picking up a new truck camper. This picture is significant to today. The feeling of happiness and sadness at the same time. Happy to see a new season, but yet sad to see summer go at the same time. .⠀

I get messages all the time telling me how perfect my life is. (Looks) I don’t ever want someone comparing themselves to my “highlights” because that’s what this is. All of these pictures are taken when I have the time and funds to adventure into the wilderness and get creative with a shutter and some light. So a couple months ago, my sister in law told me about a photographer who was looking for mental health stories. I would be able to do a photoshoot in exchange for a story of my mental health journey. I didn’t even think twice about it, I just said yes. Months later, we had a date and a time set, that until it started pouring during a massive thunderstorm. We texted each other for an hour wondering if we should still meet at the desired time. I told her that I was down for pouring rain pictures, she grabbed a bag for her camera and we set out to the canola fields. By the time we got in the field and set up, the rain stopped and the sun started to shine! We ended up spending the next couple hours wandering around the acreage talking, laughing, and taking pictures. It felt so weird but fun at the same time. I went home and looked over my massive mental health story and pressed send. I didn’t even pause to think about people reading personal details about my life. I can remember being so excited to see her post my picture and story, and then went to read it and realized that my story was quadruple the length of everyone else’s. Panic started to seep across my body as I texted Jennalee worrying about cutting down my story. She assured me that each person is unique and to not worry. Weeks have passed and I have been worried about posting this to my own account due to judgement and opinions. I finally decided to get over it and embrace my history. Good, bad, and the ugly. I will post the link in the comments to Jennalee’s website where you can go and read my mental health story and many others if you wish. I sincerely hope that by reading it, it makes just one person feel more accepting of their own life, own feelings, and own struggles. Just remember, that no one is perfect, and life is not perfect. We just need to learn to love and appreciate what we have ❤️

Fall is my favourite season! There was snow falling from the sky today, and I am threatening Alberta that if it doesn’t get its shit together, we might just leave for Ontario a bit sooner. Have you ever seen an east coast fall? My favourite is the reds, yellows, oranges and greens reflecting off a calm lake 😍
