Mental Conditioning Program

Mind power and successful mental conditioning come only with a sustained and sincere effort. You can’t make a wish and hope that it comes true and then forget about working on it.
The mind reacts much the same way the body does. If you train and condition it regularly, it will respond with a performance that you can always count on and be proud of.

Some of the key ingredients to an effective mind conditioning program are motivation, incentive, visualization, and, most important of all, belief.
A 2009 study published in The Perceptual Motor Skills Journal showed that when athletes believe in their competition training plans, they are more likely to be victorious in their given sport.
The power of belief may even be related to fatigue.

A 2009 study published in The European Journal of Applied Physiology entitled “The Limit to Exercise Tolerance in Humans: Mind over Muscle” challenged the notion that fatigue causes exhaustion and showed that exhaustion might be caused by perceived rate of effort.
What does this mean to you?
It means you’ve got to believe.
You’ve got to believe in yourself, in your talents and capabilities, in your goals and all you hope to achieve, and in your methods for achieving them.

The beginning of understanding what your mind holds in store for you is a simple realization. You must realize that within you is all the power you need to succeed both in training and dieting, which will ultimately lead to success in competition. Within you is all the potential for success. Within you is the brain power of a superman, or superwoman.
Once you make this realization—that your mind holds a vast wealth of knowledge, information, control, power, ability, and potential—you can start to tap into that power. You can delve into your own secret depths and find out what you’re really made of.

Sticking Points
_
Since my first Powerlifting seminar in 1998, I’ve been saying that all of the sticking points are physical, technical, or mental. This can be expanded to social as well, or in most cases, some type of combination of them.
_
We all would like for the sticking point (aka - mini-max) to be physical. Most already assume they are. I know this, because I been asked, "What exercise do I need to do to fix my X?" We all wish it were so easy.
_
I’ve realized, more and more over the years, that most of the advising, and if you want to call it coaching, of lifters is all based on nonverbal communication. Yes, there is a program designed, but by the end of the day, based on what they tell me, what I see, and their reactions, the training that was done at the end was vastly different than the plan. Because of this, it becomes their program based on their verbal and nonverbal feedback and the success is much higher and they know how and why each pivot was made.
_
At the end of the day, it doesn’t mean shit what the program said. It’s what they do on meet day.
_
Don’t just follow text for your training. The written word could be debated as one of the worst forms of communication.
_
If you work with a coach, start asking why as well as why not. At the end of the day, it’s still your work, progress, and meet.

I received a lot of great feedback on my last @elitefts article about training the #hamstrings for strength. Many people wanted to see a video of the stiff legged #goodmorning, so here ya go 😊 swipe to see a side view, and note my #rangeofmotion and position of the weight relative to my hips — the hips are behind the weight, putting a lot of emphasis on the hamstrings. When performing this movement, I recommend trying to “spread the floor” with your feet as hard as possible. And don’t forget to #brace! #hamstringworkout

The reason I like the wide squat so much is efficiency. It shortens the distance the bar has to travel to reach depth.

For example, when I first showed up at Westside, the average distance the bar had to travel for me to hit depth was 16 inches. After working with Louie Simmons for so many years, it was shortened to just 6 inches.

Simply widening my stance shaved 10 full inches off my range of motion, which is a big advantage when you have PR weight on your back. - @underthebar
