'Twas the night before Christmas, and last year at this time,
Santa made an unusual request in the cutest of rhymes.
The sleigh needed a leader since Rudolph was sick;
Elderwood's very own, JaQuay, was Santa's first pick.
Across the sky, she headed the reindeer team,
Stopping here and there, living her dream.
Now a year later, some things have changed;
A new baby was born and he needed a name!
Santa landed his sleigh with his usual cheer,
As JaQuay heard the chatter from all the reindeer.
This time she didn't rush from out of the barn;
This year, they'd have to come inside where it was cozy and warm.
Santa opened the door and stepped inside,
Followed by Rudolph who was next in line.
Then Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen,
Along with Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen.
They surrounded JaQuay in her hay-filled stall,
As they gazed upon the baby in amazement and awe.
He was black as coal, but not naughty, of course;
He was sturdy and strapping, as strong as a horse!
His fiber glowed like his mom's with tiny ringlets and curls;
There was no doubt that one day he'd be popular with the girls.
It was time for a name, as JaQuay stepped towards the team;
With a gleam in her eye, she said, "His name is Joaquín!" With those words, Joaquín rose from the floor;
He flew around the barn and almost out the door!
Santa grabbed him from the air and returned him to the ground;
With a big smile he said, "This one's sleigh bound!" Just like his mom in more ways than one,
Joaquín would one day join in on the fun.
It would be some time before he was big enough for the flight,
But as he drifted off to sleep, he dreamt of that night.
Santa and his team tiptoed from the room;
JaQuay looked out the window as the sleigh passed by the moon.
She heard Santa's voice ringing as they crossed through the sky;
She watched all of the reindeer as they each waved goodbye. "Merry Christmas to all from JaQuay and my team,
But especially to my new friend, the little Joaquín!"
