Eve Kritler  One day I’ll live by the ocean and all of this will make a bit more sense.

The feeling of the desert washes over me the in same way the ocean always does. And this is what it feels like.

@masgrimes and I are headed back to the southwest in just a few weeks, and my heart can barely wait.

When I was little, I was fascinated by the bookshelf filled with encyclopedias and reference books in our house. I would pull them out letter by letter, looking at the pictures and reading the captions, asking for further explanations along the way.

But the best books of all were the F and W encyclopedias. F for fish and W for whale. I remember being in awe of how large a sunfish could get, and amazed by how many different kinds of whales there were in oceans around the world. Pulling out an old metal measuring tape, I would stretch it across the house, trying to see how much room each species of whale would take up if it was swimming in my house. And looking back, I think it was there, with my books and my measuring tape that I first made friends with these creatures.

Looking back at another favorite. Who knew it would take so long to get the orange sky and blue waves to work together and not turn into a muddy mess?

Thank you to all of you that bought prints yesterday! Another reminder that you can get 20% off prints with the code MERRYANDBRIGHT until tonight at 11:59 EST!

New prints in the shop today! And 20% off until Wednesday at 11:59 EST with the code MERRYANDBRIGHT. ✨

Taking this new swimming whale menagerie print with me to @madewell tomorrow! This idea has been spinning around in my head for a while, and I’m glad to have finally made it a reality. ✨ And if you live in or around portland, swing by the Madewell Bridgeport location tomorrow from 2-4pm for prints and paintings, sweets you can eat, and all the holiday deals!

Big thank you to Brian at @pearlprinting for helping me out with these prints!

I want to live where soul meets body
And let the sun wrap its arms around me and
Bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing
And feel
Feel what it's like to be new

I’ve tried to figure out what this moment felt like for months. And after remembering the above words, it came to me. This moment felt like how it feels to close your eyes and stare at the setting sun — the last of its warmth creating warm tones on the inside of your eyelids, while the skin on your arms and legs cools from the setting sun. It’s the moment right before this though that’s my favorite. The one where you and all of your surroundings are drenched in gold, and you’re not sure that anything in the world could ever be more magical than how the light seems makes everything in its path into something painfully beautiful.

‘Soul Meets Body’
Death Cab for Cutie

The first one of its kind.

Fresh off of a week at the coast, this painting came to be, and it’s become one of my favorites to date. Reminding me of days spent floating in the cold ocean water, feeling the waves push back and forth, and watching the light glint off the moving water.

To my friends in Portland! If you’re around this Sunday from 2-4pm, I’ll be at @madewell in Bridgeport Village visiting with people and selling some new prints and originals! The incredible crew at Madewell will be providing some sweet treats, as well as some holiday deals (20% off $100 or more and 30% off $200 or more...which is an especially good deal if you’re in need of some new jeans like I am 😉). Come by to say hello and do some shopping for the holidays! I’d love to see you there! ✨

And a side note, meet Luna the kitten. She’s one of the very best things that happened to me this year, and I am so so thankful. 🌙✨

Well, once again it's been a little while. And while I love sharing my work with all of you on here, this recent season has taken me away from Instagram, and more into the life beyond my fingertips. Between dealing with the stresses of life, leaving one job, starting a new one, buying my first car, investing in friendships and relationships, and taking care of my new little kitten Luna, the days have flown by.

And after these breaks, I often think, where do we start? Where and how do we pick up when so much has happened?

I've found that sometimes starting again takes reflection. I've been doing this a bit with my work as it feels like its hit a stale point. The ideas are coming slower, and my motivation to make things happen feels stagnant. So I’m looking back at the work I’ve made, as it often only makes sense after the fact - after I’m able to connect the feelings and experiences of a certain season with the visual outcome of the painting.

So here’s to a time of reflecting back, with the hope of a new season of growth, and one where our work helps us to work through our lives.

Wearing some of my all-time @madewell favorites, and getting ready for tomorrow with the help of this little kitten. 🌙✨

A whole little family of cacti. 🌵

A little look into what happens before the painting begins. Never underestimate the power of tracing paper and a good kneaded eraser. 👌🏻

Over the last couple of weeks, I've gotten a lot of messages about my process, and I think this little timelapse sums it up nicely. On some days, I stick to this routine, while on others I dive straight into the painting. There's value to both of these methods. One allows you to train your mind to plan out a composition in advance, utilizing other methods of mark making to do so, while the other allows you to accept chance and learn to work on your toes.

In my opinion, there is no 'right' way to do this, as your approach to starting your painting will be as unique as the paintings you create. This is simply one way to go about that. My hope for you all is that this helps to give you some new tips and tricks, but that ultimately you're encouraged to forge your own path in the methods of your process!

As always, feel free to ask questions in the comments below. I'm glad to try and answer them as best I can! 💪🏻
