So fun to meet and spend time with so many creative individuals in LA a couple weeks back. Now, it's back to life in Portland where the sun is shining (finally), and I'm about to start a new job. All these changes in the last few weeks seem to have drained me a bit of inspiration, but I'm hoping that this new direction will encourage me to be more productive and driven in the down time I have to work with my paints.

Working on a menagerie of cactuses for the rest of this evening. @masgrimes and I are so excited to be coming to LA later this week, but for now that means lots of hard work. πŸ’ͺ🏻

Although these abstracts are different from a lot of the work I post on here, they’ve been instrumental in my journey as an artist over the last few months. These works taught me what it looks like to take memories, filled with all kinds of senses, and turn them into visual works. I am so grateful for their influence on my work.

A big thank you goes out to @pearlprinting for working with me to get these prints just right, and my @masgrimes for always knowing how to best capture a moment.

A little prickly pear practice in the changing light this morning before I left for work.

A big thank you to all of you who replied to my story! With your help, I finally figured out how to open the darn bottle of masking fluid, and am looking forward to experimenting with its magic!

Spent last week proofing some new prints to have out to you all very soon!

A huge thank you to @pearlprinting for making all of the print magic come to life! ✨

For an extra entry, read on...
I used to take pictures of everything. I thought that by taking a picture, I would remember the place, the moment, the feeling, better. But then I realized that I didn't actually remember the moment in the picture at all; the picture was simply a distraction from the experience. So instead, I tried to focus on taking a mental snapshot of moments I wanted to remember, taking note of the colors around me, how the ground felt beneath my feet, listening to the sounds around me. And as I've practiced this, I've started to collect much more vivid memories. And on days like today, I replay them in my mind, and it's almost as if I'm right there again, watching a pink haze come down over the towering cactuses, freezing my toes off as the sun sets behind the hills.

For an extra entry, share a moment, a memory, a time that you remember vividly. It could be anything from how you felt when you took your first plane ride, to the colors in the most vivid sunset you ever saw. Share away! I can't wait to read what you all have to say. 🌡

Three amigos on a Monday.

These last few weeks have me feeling a little crazed and a bit prickly. But in the midst of it all, @masgrimes told me today to just stop and paint a cactus. So happy Friday everyone! Here's a cactus that lives in Papago Park in Phoenix, Arizona. πŸŒ΅πŸ˜‰

In some good news though, last week we were down in California, and @carlinigraphy and @ginnybobinny took us to a magical art store where I bought a bunch of new brushes. (Thanks guys ☺). I'm hoping to work on some larger scale projects, including a few more of these...🌡🌡🌡

When I film myself working, I often get too distracted by the pressure of making things perfect that I forget to play. I forget to let myself run down experiemental rabbit trails, and play with my materials, no matter what the result. So last Sunday, I decided to move the camera a bit farther away from my work and play with new mediums and materials. From a new masking fluid to natural clays from the Oregon Coast, I relearned how to play with my work. And although I'm not particularly happy with any of the products of this rabbit trail, I do think it was an essential time for me, and something I need to remember to bring into my practice more frequently.

For now though, @masgrimes and I are in California getting ready for his workshop this weekend. Hoping for some of those California rays and a little bit of relaxation after a week of nonstop work and projects. Happy Wednesday everyone!

Trying to be more diligent about squeezing in moments to paint in between work and meetings and all the things that seem to take up time. While I'm loving these abstract moments and their ability to speak exactly what I feel, I'm starting to plan and work on some new more realism-based works, which should come along here after the craziness slows down a bit. For now though, thank you all for your patience. I'm so excited for the things to come!

Truth be told, I never expected how amazing it would feel to visually let loose in my work. It's helped me to come back to the basics, to focus in on the elements and the details of what make this medium so special. I'm learning to take what I see, and recreate it in a way that I can capture the essence of its character. And so in its representational inaccuracy and open-ended form, it becomes incredibly precise and accurate. Because the representation of the form or object is exactly how I perceive it to be, both physically and emotionally.

If you made it this far through my verbal processing ramblings, thank you. I know that over the last months my posting habits have been sporadic and brief at best. But in the coming ones, I'm hoping to let you all into what goes through my head as I process these pieces, both big and small, and let you in on more of the day to day processes of my practice.
