TL;DR: Direct precursor to serotonin, may relieve insomnia and help mood but may also induce low dopamine levels and encourage the problems associated with that to occur.

5-HTP is a naturally occurring amino acid produced in the body and plays an important role in the biosynthesis of serotonin as it’s precursor. Within the body, 5-HTP interacts with an enzyme which cleaves off/removes part of its chemical structure to leave Serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for our feelings of well-being and happiness.
-
Based on the assumption that 5-HTP will encourage our body to produce serotonin, 5-HTP is a popularly supplemented to relieve insomnia, stress and depression. However, it has been shown by Hitz et al (2012) that treatment for depression with 5-HTP on its own can actually be detrimental because serotonin needs to exist in balance with the neurotransmitter dopamine. Increasing the serotonin content in the body encourages depletion of dopamine within and thereby potentially making the depression worse and inducing side effects associated with low dopamine (such as low concentration, fatigue and mood swings). To compensate for this, if 5HTP is used for depression, it is used alongside a precursor to dopamine to afford balance.
-
On the other hand, there’s abundant evidence of 5-HTP supplementation may promote sleep, yet this is not fully understood. In conclusion, 5-HTP needs to be taken with caution, everyone is different, you may very well find yourself benefiting from it.

TL;DR: Acts as an anti-fatigue agent during exercise.

Hi guys! Sorry it’s been a while since my last post. It’s been a sad combination of uni, a new job with a pinch of laziness.
-
Anywho, have you ever heard of L-Ornithine?
L-Ornithine is an amino acid. There are 20 amino acids that your body uses to build proteins. L-Ornithine is not one of them, but is still very important. Primarily, your body can synthesise L-Ornithine on its own, which is why it is not considered an ESSENTIAL amino acid. L-Ornithine a primary player in the urea cycle, a process where your body converts ammonia (NH3) to urea for excretion, which keeps the NH3 levels below a toxic level.
-
L-Ornithine has been explored as an exercise supplement for some time, these studies have found many benefits to the intake of the supplement, which is why you might see it pop up in the ingredient list on a few things you’re taking, such as sleep-enhancers and detox-pills. The molecule also naturally occurs in a lot of common foods, such as meats, eggs and nuts. -
L-Ornithine has been claimed to increase human growth hormone production in athletic males, which has been disproved by literature (Fogelholm 1993). It has also been said to support the liver, however this is naturally occurring without the influence of supplementation. More positively, the supplement has shown positive results as an anti-fatigue for exercise (Demura 2010, Sugino 2008), tested on human subjects.
-
Anxiety management was explored by Kurata et al. They found that supplemented L-Ornithine in rats increased the levels of the molecule in the rats brain and decreased anxiety-related behaviours. This is promising, however rats are not humans so further studies would be required to bridge this to human applications. -
Hope you learned something! Let me know if you have any questions or feedback :)

TL;DR: Vitamin B7 – improves hair, skin and nail health through mediating the breakdown of protein into amino acids, to then be used to build essential proteins such as keratin (The stuff that constructs your hair, skin and nails)
-
First of all, apologies for going MIA, I have been super-duper busy this last month between my job, my masters and my fitness. If you’re into supplements beyond protein powder I have no doubt that you have come across biotin, typically advertised toward hair, skin and nail health… >Does supplementing the substance work? >If so, how? >Should I take it? >Let’s investigate!
-
Being a vitamin, this chemical is definitely of dietary significance. However, that does not mean you need to take it as a supplement! It completely depends on whether or not you get enough biotin in your diet, it is recommended that we take between 30-100 micrograms per day depending on your current situation (e.g pregnant women) Foods such as egg yolk, liver (very high), nuts, legumes, cereals, cauliflower, bananas and mushrooms all contain biotin and if your diet contains an abundance of any of these (but not limited to) then it is very likely that supplementing biotin will provide no benefit to you. However, being a water-soluble vitamin, there is no harm in doing so even if you are getting your recommended daily amount, if you have too much it will be excreted in urine.
-
Biotin plays an important role in various biochemical pathways in the body. I’ll focus specifically on its role in hair, skin and nail health. Hair, skin and nails all contain a protein called keratin. Biotin acts as a coenzyme in the biochemical pathways used to breakdown different proteins, carbohydrates and fatty acids contributing to various bodily functions. Proteins break down into amino acid building blocks which can be then used to build other proteins in the body, one being keratin.

Throwback to my poster presentation covering my little research project at the end of 2017. I'm quite excited to return to uni this coming semester for my 2nd quarter to my #masters 🤓. As I work in an analytical lab, getting back to uni and practicing chemical synthesis gives amazing contrast to running analytical instrumentation, like HPLC and GC all day.✔
-
If you're interested, my project covered an alternative method of chemical synthesis using constant flow #chemistry. ☢☢

TL;DR: 🤓MAY Increases cognitive function.⤵⤵⤵

✔Huperzine A (HA) is a naturally occurring compound extracted from the Huperzia Serrata plant. On the contrary of extracts! Did you know that regardless of consistent extract weight in capsules or supplements, the amount of active chemical can be at a large variance and will be different batch to batch
-
✔Anyway, HA is proposed to inhibit the breakdown of the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine by an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase. The supplement can cross the blood brain barrier and thus has potential to exert this effect in this area. Through the inhibited breakdown, the increased amount of acetylcholine in the brain is proposed to increase cognitive capability due to increased neuronal activity, fuelled by acetylcholine. The function is extremely similar to my previous chemical post on citicholine. An enzyme responsible for breaking down a source of choline is inhibited, resulting in a build-up of choline in the brain.
-
✔Once upon a time, the supplement was investigated as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, however today the study is considered of poor quality and the results have been omitted with no further investigation. I could not find any studies supporting this supplements capability as a cognitive enhancer other than its known mechanism of action. HOWEVER, I did find studies proving that it does as theorised – increase acetylcholine concentration in the brain, this was done by sampling human plasma and assessing its composition by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.(An interesting method of analysis I recommend reading up on!) This does not necessarily mean it’s going to enhance your cognitive capability, often theory does not translate to application, whether it works for you is at your discretion.
-
✔Try it for yourself if you want! I would love to hear how it goes. Thanks for reading.
