Xin Hua Delights is a humble eatery in Sembawang offering “PUTIEN” dishes at affordable prices. Find familiar favourites such as their Xinghua Bee Hoon ($5), a fan-pleaser with its pillowy vermicelli, simmered then stir-fried in pork broth. And the Spicy Grilled Fish ($32), which numbed our tongue with its fiery burn.

Offering a $11.90 Wagyu Lava Egg Beef Burger and $7.50 Ma La Pasta, you will feel you’ve had value for money at Roger’s Kitchen, despite the higher “kopitiam” prices. The knife-and-fork burger will have the runny yolk centre, nacho cheese, and melted cheese impress you along with the seasoned beef patty. Switch the chicken out for a Beer Battered Fish at no extra cost, to go with the tongue-numbing serving of ma la pasta.

For only $2.90, K-Toast in Clementi has the cheapest rendition of Korean-style toast you will find in Singapore. Each slice of plain white bread is slathered with butter, followed by a slice of cheese and ham, and a layer of fluffy corn omelette. Add $1 for their Bacon Toast ($3.90), which according to our writer Adam, was the best out of the bunch. It came with three strips of bacon, cabbage, and pickled daikon.

Yobanmian gets in the cool crowd at Singapore Poly and Sengkang by adding bak kwa and ma la to their simple bowl of noodles. The Ma La Ban Mian ($5) is great for those who love the flavour of Sichuan peppercorns. But true ma la eaters might be disappointed by the lack of the numbing sensation. Bak Kwa You Mian ($3.50) is more sweet than savoury, and comes with a generous amount of bak kwa bits.

Younger sister Mdm Lee had enough of being disrespected for being a woman hawker vendor at Kay Lee Roast Meat in Paya Lebar, that she left to set up her own stall. Mei Mei Roast at Ubi serves half a roast duck at $25 and a roast pork and BBQ pork platter at $10. It gets crowded during lunch time, so make sure to head down early for a taste of the good stuff.

BIG BOYS Sizzling at Beauty World will have you hooked on their chicken cutlet and mentaiko fries. Their Cornflake Chicken ($7.90) had an astounding crunch from the batter, contrasting beautifully with tender thigh meat. The Mentaiko Fries ($4.90) are also to-die-for, with a burst of flavours attributed to the use of real mentaiko.

Add some lobsters to Maggi Goreng and immediately it becomes a place to check out with the makan kakis. Jom Makan BBQ Seafood is a halal zi char stall at Yishun, serving a Boston Lobster with Maggi Goreng ($23). You might only get a few morsels of lobster meat, but the noodles were deliciously spicy. Opt for the Crayfish with White Bee Hoon ($20) if you’re not a fan of spicy food.
