HAPPY WORLD ELEPHANT DAY!
To one and all, lets take today to ensure that we impart the message to everyone we know that elephants are incredibly special animals.
They do not deserve to be ridden or to be shown off as some performing robot for humans' entertainment.
Elephants are and deserve to be so much more than that.

AMAZING NEWS - A NEW ELEPHANT HAS JOINED THE HERD AT PHUKET ELEPHANT SANCTUARY!

Louise and the team at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary shared the most WONDERFUL story over the weekend, as new elephant Sri Nuan joined Madee, Kannika, Dok Gaew and Gaew Ta last week :) "Sri Nuan is in her mid 40’s and originated from Surin Province in north east Thailand. She has worked in the trekking industry in Phuket for over 10 years but that life is thankfully behind her and she will no longer have to carry tourists ever again." To read more about Sri Nuan, view more photographs or to book your trip to meet the elephants yourself, head on over to @phuketelephantsanctuary or visit their Facebook page or website www.phuketelephantsanctuary.org.

ANOTHER ELEPHANT SANCTUARY COMING TO SOUTHERN THAILAND!

Fantastic news, everyone! Krabi is a very well-known destination for tourists due to its stunning scenery. For elephants, however, the picture is very different.

This is all due to change next year however with the launch of Krabi Elephant Sanctuary as a result of the hard work and dedication of Henrik Enevoldsen, working together with Lek Chailert's Save Elephant Foundation. I'm sure you, like us at EARS Asia, cannot wait to watch this project grow! :) http://scandasia.com/henrik-wants-to-create-safe-haven-for-elephants-in-krabi/

GREAT NEWS FROM WILD AID HONG KONG!

WildAid Hong Kong 野生救援 today released a press release following a meeting with Hong Kong's largest political party, the DAB. The party is going to fully support legislation for the ivory ban and, in turn, the survival of elephants.

This is most certainly #NewsToOurEARS! Next stop, a full and complete ban.

THE RAIN PROVED A LITTLE MUCH FOR THESE ELES THIS WEEK!

https://www.facebook.com/lek.chailert/videos/1220699194724086/

Here in SE Asia we've experienced rather a wet and wild week as a storm surged. Even in Hong Kong it has been raining cats and dogs but the weather proved a little much for these elephants at Elephant Nature Park, Chiang Mai - just watch them rush for shelter :) #EARSAsia

CHECK OUT THE GORGEOUS MADEE AND KANNIKA AS THEY SPENT THE WEEKEND GRAZING

Louise reports from Phuket Elephant Sanctuary that Kannika and Madee not only love bathing in the ponds, they love munching on the lush green bamboo leaves throughout the sanctuary. Bamboo being one of the Asian Elephants most favourite staples in their diet.

Some of the sanctuary's bamboo bushes overhang into the pond therefore making it easy for these gorgeous elephants to do two things at once…. Bathe AND eat bamboo!

These images really are a sight to behold and show the true joy of an elephant that is not forced to work or perform, but left alone to be an elephant.

DRAMATIC RESCUE BY SRI LANKAN NAVY!

This poor elephant found herself caught up in a current, sending her 15 miles out to sea! Fortunately, the Sri Lankan Navy were able to intervene and bring her back to safety.

Although elephants are very good swimmers, had she not been able to find land soon, the outcome may have been very different.

Congratulations to the team involved!

HONG KONG SEIZES LARGEST IVORY HAUL IN 30 YEARS

HK Customs officials this week seized a shocking shipment of illegal ivory this week, shipped via Malaysia, another terrible hub for the trade.
An estimated 720 elephants were killed for the worth of the shipment, believed to be worth almost USD million.
Hong Kong was allegedly the final destination. Our dying market is still being fought for by ivory traders who are seeking ridiculously high compensation from the government prior to a proposed full ban.

WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU UP TO, GAEW TA?

The most tremendous footage from Phuket Elephant Sanctuary this week as Gaew Ta, who is blind in both eyes, was filmed sneaking into her new best friend, Kannika's, nighttime enclosure!
https://www.facebook.com/phuketelephantsanctuary/videos/1309107999202751/

This is an incredible sight and a great testament to the mental and physical recovery of this very special elephant.
