“Keep it fake, shake and bake” I have been saying this since 1995. Especially around my crew TDV. Mostly because my crew listened to Punk and Metal and Hop Hop all at the same time and never gave a fuck. They were from Ottawa, London and Vancouver. All different realities, but we all respected the brotherhood of graffiti.
.
We noticed that the people who screamed KEEP IT REAL would end up broke and being hypocritical at some point. So what exactly would KEEP IT REAL mean?
.
When I was doing 3Ds, downtown writers would diss me saying I was imitating GERMANS. Then when I painted with the most famous German 3D writers on earth, they all shut up. Then I painted with the Kings in Australia, then the Bronx and so on and so on.
.
The most hilarious thing is that anyone who is a King at anything always respects another Kings work. And it is BECAUSE they never tried to fit in. They respect originality and the work ethic. ESPECIALLY in the birthplace of graffiti NY.
.
Now in 2018 I’m seeing kids dissing me for sponsoring adds and for not doing my name anymore lol. I have been doing all aspects of graffiti since 1989, and I’m still nice to everyone I meet and i try to inspire as many people as possible every single day. But I guess some things never change. KEEP IT REAL! I’ll keep it fake, shake and bake. Las Vegas next week then Miami. Keeping it fake seems to do me pretty good lol 😁.

“Sometimes the story is worth more than than the money.” .
.
When I moved out in 2000, I had a bed a computer and $300 to my name. I had no business plan or short term goals or any kind of logic at all in the move. I just knew that I needed to move downtown and do as much art as possible, and hopefully get paid for it.
.
It turns out my graffiti notoriety helped out immensely because everyone wanted to hire an ARTIST and not a DESIGNER. So all those hundreds of murals I had done for free were actually worth something.
.
To this day everyone hires me because of the size of my portfolio and because of personal relationships. They all know money has never been my main objective because I turn down so many jobs. And THAT is worth much more then money.
.
I lived month to month up until last year, that is 17 years following my dreams. Work ethic beats talent ANY day of the week. You cannot beat someone who is obsessive compulsive and works every second to be the best ever. I’m not here to get money and then sit back and relax, I’m here to inspire others and to out due myself every time. Because one day I shall be gone, and everyone will have STORIES about me, and that shall be worth more than money.

“Andy Warhol Wants His 15 Minutes Back” It was recently discovered that the famous 15 MINUTES OF FAME quote he said was actually stolen and altered from 2 friends of his.
.
It is amazing that Andy Warhol is more famous now then ever yet he died in the 80s. He basically predicted where art was heading and he is imitated now more then ever.
.
His obsession was the future and how he could use technology in new ways. But nowadays people don’t focus on that, they just focus on imitating some of his tactics and TRING to get as famous as possible. .
.

It should be noted that the art world had turned its back on him before he died, they saw him as passé. Yet as soon as he was gone, his art started selling for astounding amounts of money. .
.

The art world is basically a bunch of rich kids fighting over who is cool at the moment. Andy Is not happy, and he wants his 15 minutes back. @durothethird @andywarholart @andymeetswarhol @thewarholmuseum #andywarhol #artquote #ipadlettering #doart #integrity #durothethird

“The more people tell me I’m crazy, the more I know I’m on the right path. @durothethird .
.
I was crazy for moving out with no money, I was crazy for starting my own magazine out of high school, i was crazy for not going to university, I was crazy for ever thinking I would have my own clothes, I was crazy for not charging enough, I was crazy for building a recording studio, I was crazy for taking pictures of dogs, I was crazy for thinking I would meet anyone in Australia, I was crazy for thinking I would meet anyone in Miami, I was crazy for thinking I would paint with graffiti legends in NY, I was crazy for agreeing to pay my insane rent...
.
.
Everyone says I’M CRAZY. Interesting how the crazier I get, the more successful I get. And always by trusting my gut. I have never cared what what anyone ever thought. I would dream of something and then did it, no excuses. To ME, crazy is not following your dreams. I am normal.

On monday I have 7 interviews coming out on a brand new YouTube / instagram initiative. In one of the interviews I specifically talk about FAME.
.

When I quit graffiti for 10 years and then came back, I noticed that it had changed drastically. I saw a new kind of pop art/street style emerging and it was catering strictly to the rich and famous. I was VERY confused as to how anyone could call that graffiti? It was like an Andy Warhol / Banksy kind of style mixed in with current celebrities. And all of it bragging about and endorsing FAME.
.

But on a more troublesome note, I saw the same mentality within music producers BEGGING to be famous and to not even care about the actually MUSIC. This REALLY bothered me. Because I have been making music for as long as I have been doing visual arts.
.

I came to the conclusion that all this reality tv bullshit had infiltrated their minds, and had sold the notion that being famous was more important then actually being good at something.
.

I shall be VERY clear in what I am about to say. If your god is the $ sign and your only interest in life is to be famous and to obtain material wealth and then to brag about it on social media, then you ARE my enemy. And if I EVER catch any of you TRING to rip off my art after 42 years of blood sweat and tears, then you shall pay the consequences.
.

You don’t think I get offered to do SELL OUT art every single day of my life? I turn it all down and do my own clothes, my own ideas, my own art. And THAT is why I get so much work. People hire me to be ME, not to copy cartoon characters or to paint money signs $. You shall all drown in your own fame, while I float buy in my boat build of skill and kindness. @durothethird @durothethird.drawings

“1 phone call is worth a 1000 text messages”.
.
When I was in grade 7, I had a crush on a girl called Allison. I used to call her on her home phone and always had to deal with her dad answering before I spoke to get to her. It was nerve racking, especially for a kid going through puberty.
.

Nowadays people send HD images and video to people who they have never met, then start texting immediately. Usually they never even hear the other persons voice until they meet one day. Recent studies have shown that millennials suffer from record levels of paranoia, depression and over sensitivity. Gee I wonder why. Maybe because thy all hide behind screens and create a fake persona, never really dealing with people at all.
.

In the real world you will HAVE to deal with people face to face, and face conflict in real life. But that is not encouraged, what is encouraged is to hide behind a screen and tell that world that you are a BRAND and that you are worth something.
.

What exactly are you worth? You can’t even hold a conversation or look at someone in the eyes when they talk to you. In real life it is PEOPLE skills that will get you somewhere. Anyone who knows me know that I will call them randomly just to tell them I care, or to ask if everything is ok if I see them online upset about something.
.

Maybe if more people would actually call someone they cared about instead of just texting all the time, then maybe they might realize that they made that persons day. And that it meant 1000 times more then any text message could.

I remember the first time I ever thought to myself that I was FUCKING AWESOME.
.
I was in grade 12 and we were doing our annual art show at my high school. Everyone else was showing portraits and typical types of artwork, so I thought to myself that it would be more bad ass if I only showed my ILLEGAL murals, especially showcasing my freight trains. I was happy just going against the grain. I didn’t think about the repercussions of showing illegal activity, I just thought it would be cool and provocative. Then the most amazing thing happened.
.
My typography teacher pulled me aside and told me how much he respected me and that I was a REAL artist. I was very confused and asked him what he meant by that? . He told me that he did art because he HAD to, but that I did art because I WANTED to, even if it meant breaking the law and risking my own life. I was taken aback by that answer and told him that of course I WANTED to do art, otherwise I would shrivel up and die. That was in 1996.
.
Nowadays with social media sending conflicting messages all over the world, there seems to be this culture of oversensitivity. People are afraid to be bold because of online judgment or repercussions. This kind of “THE UNIVERSE SHALL TAKE CARE OF ME” bullshit attitude… and the words SPIRITUALITY and DESTINY being thrown around a lot. Do you think that ANY of your heroes just stood around and waited for things to happen? Do you think that Alexander the Great just stood around and waited to conquer the world? Do you think Ghandi just hoped for the best when he stood up to the English Empire? Do you think Steve Jobs just chilled out when he went up against IBM?
.
No they didn’t, they KNEW they were AWESOME and they fought until the very end. I have no problem telling anyone how awesome I am. And I have almost 800 murals to prove it. Done with NO SKETCHES.
.
There NEEDS to be a time in everyone’s life when they realize that they are FUCKING AWESOME at something. So stop with the shy bullshit and TELL people what you are good at and watch the opportunities come ;p0)
.
By the way… THIS POST IS FUCKING AWESOME! #quotes #awesome #durothethird #ipadprocreate

“I am more famous for the clients I turn down, than the clients I take on.” This is a quote of mine that I started saying after I realized that the stories of me turning down clients, were becoming more famous then my actually murals. .
.
Last year while I was painting LIAR LIAR, a ton of huge jobs came my way and I ended up giving them their deposits back, or just saying NO. The reason, because I did not agree with their direction and they REFUSED to listen to me. Why should I work for someone doesn’t listen to me? Do you actually think I would waste one second of my life doing someone else’s bidding? Do I look like I live on my knees? My mother raised me better.
.

I have turned down TONS of venues who wanted me to paint the Brooklynn wings. I turned down a 5 star hotel who changed their mind and wanted me to paint a Toronto Skyline. I turned down a high paying job of portraits because it glamorized violence. I turned down a Fortune 500 sponsorship because I thought their product sucked and I would not use it. No matter who you are, no matter how much money you have, I will never bow down and do your bidding. Especially if you have the audacity to tell me what to do when it comes to art.
.

All my friends tell me I am crazy and to just shut up and take the money, at that point I tell them that they have never found anything to be passionate about in life. I chase guts and glory, not the money. To me, making people happy with art is my addiction. And being appreciated. That is what I live for.
