I just spent my last 3 days in Thailand up in Chiang Rai at the @anantara_goldentriangle. Captive elephants are a touchy subject (and for good reason) however over the last 3 days I learnt a lot about these beautiful creatures, the history of captive elephants, and the amazing work done by the team at this resort. Of course in an ideal world there would be no captive elephants. Elephants are meant to be in the wild but that’s simply not possible due to past circumstances. For thousands of years elephants have been captivated, mistreated and used for various inhumane reasons across Thailand. At Anantara all elephants have been rescued from illegal logging camps and elephant shows. They cannot be set free in the wild for obvious reasons, so the next best thing is being well looked after at ethical elephant camps like this one where they’re cared for, rehabilitated, and able to roam freely. If you do decide to visit an elephant sanctuary during your travels please do your research first and make sure you’re taking part in ethical places only!
