Big Wheel, Big Dreams - #doodlewashApril2019

Today, I was running late most of the day and by the time I got home from work, I was thoroughly exhausted. I hadn’t sketched anything yet and had less time to sketch than usual. My adult mind told me to just forget it already and try again tomorrow, but as you know I don’t like to listen to that buzzkill voice in my brain. So what did I DO? Well, I put down my “precious” fountain pen and handed a Sharpie pen and some paints to my inner child and told him to go out and play. This is what he made really quickly, before I even had a chance to ask him why. Once I saw what appeared, however, I realized that though I’d thought that I’d sketched all of my bicycles as a kid, I forgot my very first set of wheels. It wasn’t a bicycle, but something called a Big Wheel, due to the large wheel in the front I presume. Being only a few inches from the ground, this was the ideal ride for kids who hadn’t even started school yet. And proof that my inner child is apparently only preschool age. But I remember that age well because everything I did was amazing! Nothing was judged, simply applauded and met with a sea of smiles from friends and family. That kid didn’t have any fear of failure and could DO anything with perfection. Well, yeah, not perfect, but perfectly wonderful to those who cared about him and that’s all that mattered at the time… (full story on doodlewash.com!). -

One Giant Leap - #doodlewashApril2019

Just a couple of years before I was born, Neil Armstrong took a step on the surface of the moon. Back on earth people were amazed and in awe of such a fabulous achievement. They were certain that it would just be a matter of years before space travel would be something common. In truth, we’re living in the times they dreamed about back then, but I’m still waiting for my spaceship. That historic walk on the moon prompted a famous line that was misheard on earth to be, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” This, of course, doesn’t make any sense at all because “man” and “mankind” are essentially the same thing. Instead, Armstrong actually said, “that’s one small step for a man,” which adds all of the meaning to the phrase. The idea that one person could do something that has an effect on the world as a whole. This, of course, made me go through a phase when I was a little kid of wanting to be an astronaut. Not just to fly around in space, which would be cool, but to make some sort of impact on the world. Of course, I never became an astronaut and now have a fear of heights so that’s probably never likely to happen. But I still remember the dream… (full story on doodlewash.com!). -

Someone You Can Count On - #doodlewashApril2019

This week has been a whirlwind of activity already and it’s only Tuesday, so I was excited to sit for a moment and doodlewash a couple of elephants for our prompt today. As much work as I had to DO today, I still took time to go to a belated birthday lunch with one of my best friends whom I adore. That may seem odd to say when I tell you that this was the first time we’ve gotten together this year. But, that’s the thing. We have that certain connection that always reignites whenever we DO manage to spend some quality time together. It’s as if no months have passed at all. That, to me is the mark of a best friend. It’s not about how much time you spend with someone, but how you spend the time that you do. And it’s about having that someone who always seems to spin back into your life at just the right moment. On my birthday, Saturday, I had been missing a friend of mine in Los Angeles whom I’d lost touch with over the last couple of years. While Philippe and I were having lunch that day, she called me! It was one of the best presents I could ever hope to receive. And, it felt like no time had managed to pass at all. Another best friend moment. I’ll admit that I’m quiet and shy and not prone to rush to social gatherings. But I have a deep love for my friends and feel lucky knowing that I have people in my life that show up just when I need them most… (full story on doodlewash.com!). -

To Catch A Bit Of Hope - #doodlewashApril2019

When I was kid, I used to see dogs in the park rushing to capture a frisbee in their mouths. It was thrilling to watch them rush with glee and sometimes even leap into the air to catch it. Then they’d excitedly return, practically smiling, as though they’d accomplished something that’s never before been done. Each new time, was like the first time and just as incredible as the last. While this level of resilience seems easy for our furry friends, humans sometimes have trouble seeing the world this simply. In my little mind, as a kid, it just felt like all dogs have hope. Catching that frisbee wasn’t an act of physical prowess, but a leap of faith. A faith that was unshakable. This meant that, most every time, that little dog in the park would be successful in catching that frisbee. At the time, I remember thinking how on earth could that be possible? It was incredible to think about really. That anything might be just within reach if we only had the hopeful stamina to believe in the possibility that it might actually happen. I grew up believing that anything in life is possible. And as much as I love to look backward, I’m really looking forward most of the time. Looking for that next shiny bit of hope on the horizon that guides me on to the next step in this crazy journey of life… (full story on doodlewash.com). -

Going With The Flow - #doodlewashApril2019

This has been a fabulous birthday weekend, and I’ve enjoyed every moment. Thanks all, for the lovely birthday wishes! I had many things to accomplish this weekend and I’m running behind on all of them, but it’s been such a fun weekend that I don’t mind at all. Things always have a way of getting done somehow when I’m in a super happy mood. So, I’m just taking things as they come. I stopped working on stuff this afternoon and went to the park with Philippe and our dog Phineas. It was a sunny day with just a touch of chill in the air and beautiful. Phineas is always on patrol and has to stop and sniff every tree and lamppost along the way. Though we got quite a lot of walking in eventually, it took twice the time as it should. We try to pull the leash to get him to move along and he looks back at us incredulously as if the say, “seriously? There are like a thousand mysteries here and you just want to rush right by them?” I had to stop and consider who was correct. There were indeed many things to see and so we just paused with Phineas and took in all the sights along the way. As observant as I fancy myself to be, there’s always more to see and appreciate in life… (full story on doodlewash.com!).

Another Year Older - #doodlewashApril2019

Yes, today is my birthday and I didn’t feel shy at all about making the prompt “cake” for today! I truly can’t think of anything better than lots of cake. Philippe is making my birthday cake now, though I tried to get him to make it earlier claiming I needed it as a reference for this doodlewash. He just smiled at me as he often does in the way one regards a little pet and said nothing. So I had to imagine what the scene would be like later and assemble my own version of what I’m about to enjoy. A bit of white cake, some ice cream and a single candle because lighting the appropriate number would amount to a fire hazard. Ice cream scoop at the ready, of course, to get a little more ice cream when that bit is finished. Right now, the entire house smells like a cake, so it’s both wonderful and frustrating all at the same time. But, I’m thrilled and excited to celebrate in just a few moments! I was so excited about the cake, I almost forgot that I’m actually getting gifts as well. Just little toys, I’m sure, that any big kid like me would enjoy, though I haven’t opened them yet. Growing old as I always say isn’t something one can avoid, but growing up is entirely optional… (full story on doodlewash.com!). -

I Used To Love Canned Meat - #doodlewashApril2019

One of my favorite things as a child was Spam, and sometimes fried Spam sandwiches. For those unaware, it’s meat in a can that doesn’t have to be refrigerated. And I thought it more than qualified for our prompt of “weird stuff” today. Kids like all kinds of weird things, but this was actually a treat for the whole family. It gained popularity after being used to feed troops in World War II. Though specifically labeled as “chopped pork and ham” it was reconstituted into the shape of a bar of soap and looked like neither of those ingredients. It was just weird. But as a kid, I thought it was delicious. And even though Spam was a brand name, it became so popular that it was used to refer to any sort of meat in a can. Monty Python had a comedy sketch in the early 70’s that had people trying to order food in a diner, but unable to order anything without Spam in it. As the woman practically screams “I don’t like Spam!”, the inexplicable Vikings surrounding her chant, “Spam, Spam, Spam!” When the ability to put an entire file into early chat systems became available, some would use this annoying chant to irritate others, leading us to refer to unwanted emails as “spam” today. Which in itself, is a story that also qualifies, as weird stuff!… (full story on doodlewash.com!). -

For The First Time Again - #doodlewashApril2019

While thinking about our prompt of pets, my mind immediately leapt to a puppy and kitten. I adore watching any baby animal explore the world for the first time and discover new things. It reminds me of my own grown up life and that no matter how much I think I’ve learned, there’s always something new to discover. And better than that, there’s those things I often take for granted worthy of reviewing again with fresh eyes. It’s tough to have fresh eyes as an adult. So much of what we see is already emblazoned into our brains with a preconceived notion. We already “know” what this or that is and it’s tough to stop and look at something without all of those rules rushing to mind. Beyond the visual cues that protect us, like “don’t touch fire, it’s hot and it will seriously burn you,” there are tons of other bits of knowledge that can block our ability to see the world through the eyes of a child. A world of wonder and possibility that just takes a lot of trying and DOing to make it even more wonderful! As many of you know, I really don’t like to hear about “Don’ts” only “DO’s” and that’s the very core of the manifesto I used to create Doodlewash. Unless you plan to save someone’s life in the process, telling a person not to do something is simply a matter of opinion. I love and support all sort of opinions, especially when it comes to art, but I never let them stop me from continuing to see the world with my own fresh eyes. And forge my own path in the process… (full story on doodlewash.com!).

Braving The Tornado Slide - #doodlewashApril2019

Today, for our prompt of playground, I made this quick little 3 color sketch of one of my favorite pieces of playground equipment as a child. The so-called “tornado slide” was just really super cool and when you’re very small, seemed gigantic in scale. Since, I’m in Kansas City where actual tornados occur, like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, its name was a bit ominous to be sure. This was not a ride to be taken by those afraid of heights. As a kid, I had no fear at all of heights, but as an adult I started to acquire that fear. Of course, the height is never the actual fear as it’s really just the fear of falling from that height that causes me to go weak in the knees today. I had none of these silly fears as a child. No fear of falling, nor any fear of failing at something. I knew that I could simply try again so never really made a fuss about doing so. As a kid, I was always in a constant state of trying things out and figuring out what I could along the way. As an adult, I end up comparing everything I’m about to try to a long history of the things I’ve tried before it. While I adore history, this bit of history is a pain in the butt. It often blocks me or stops me entirely from trying something new I’m considering. They say we get old and wiser, but I still find most of my true wisdom comes from my inner child. The kid who had no fear of racing down that giant slide… (full story on doodlewash.com!). -

Unicorn Day - Let’s All Make Dreams Come True! - #doodlewashApril2019

There's certainly nothing more magical than a unicorn, especially when you let you inner child come out to play, so I thought we should all celebrate Unicorn Day together. Yes, as if you didn't already know, of course, April 9th is officially Unicorn Day! Though, nobody seems to know the origin of this celebration day, that hardly matters because, uhm, unicorns!! Okay, so maybe it's being a kid in the 70's and 80's during the first wave of the unicorn craze is partly to blame for my enthusiasm. Seriously, they were everywhere you looked, from t-shirts when I was little to the Trapper Keepers people carried in high school. They made a comeback a couple of years ago as everything retro becomes cool once more. I like that my childhood is still considered retro and hasn't yet moved to the point of vintage. The same, can thankfully be said for the 50's and 60's, which served up other amazing versions of coolness. But, yes, unicorns were certainly a big part of my childhood, so it was fun to make a crazy multi-colored one here today. And, by the way, my unicorn really needs a name, don't ya think? Let me know what name you'd give this little unicorn in the comments below! … (full story on doodlewash.com!). -

A Shy Flamingo - #doodlewashApril2019

As many of you might know, since I’ve celebrated it from the moment I started posting my doodlewashes, April 8th is Draw A Bird Day, so I hope you’re having a very happy one, particularly my friends and fellow bloggers on WordPress! They are totally responsible for my bird sketching addiction. For my bird, I opted for this quickly sketched flamingo since I’ve only ever sketched one three years ago and had yet to sketch the entire bird until today. I opted for a rather shy flamingo in order to have it fit into my sketchbook nicely. I was thinking of trying a flying flamingo, but they put their neck out rather straight when they fly, so that would have made for a very small sketch. Yet, I rather liked the odd little bird that appeared. I showed Philippe and he just said it was, “weird” which I took as a compliment. In truth, posting things for everyone to see can cause a bit of shyness. I’ve learned exactly what people like most, and know that when I stray from that path, fewer people will respond or, when it comes to social media algorithms, even see it in the first place. So, I happily stray from that path whenever humanly possible! It’s fun to try new things and that’s the whole point of making a little something new each day. And, still today, that’s what you’ll often find me eagerly DOing much of the time… (full story on doodlewash.com!). -
