Dhaka Art Summit  #dhakaartsummit is the world's largest #research and #exhibition #platform for #art from #SouthAsia, now entering its 5th edition from Feb 7-15, 2020

We are pleased to see Rashid Choudhury's 'Untitled' (gift from our co-founders Nadia and Rajeeb Samdani to The MET) on view in gallery 399 of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York alongside two other works both of which are loaned to the museum by The Samdani Art Foundation. The works are:

Gypsy, 1975
Hand-woven cotton tapestry
Samdani Art Foundation (L.2018.50.1)

Untitled, 1979
Hand-woven cotton tapestry
Samdani Art Foundation (L.2018.50.2)

Untitled, 1981
Hand-woven cotton tapestry
Gift of Nadia and Rajeeb Samdani, 2018 (2018.835)

Rashid Choudhury was a pioneer of the modern art movement in Bangladesh. He trained at Dacca Art College, and then in Spain and France, where he began to work in tapestry. Choudhury returned to Bangladesh in 1964 to become the first full-time instructor of Fine Arts at Chittagong University. The artist’s visual language balances local and regional references with a more formal modernist aesthetic. His pieces convey a deeply visceral rhythmic sensation that resonates with the work of Henri Matisse, but which developed from traditional imagery, in particular representations of female deities. His numerous public commissions include the tapestries in the Louis Kahn-designed Parliament building in Dhaka.

Samdani Art Foundation is excited to announce the open call for Samdani Art Award 2020 for young Bangladeshi artists under the age of 40!
In partnership with the Delfina Foundation, the Samdani Art Foundation launches a call for applications from young Bangladeshi artists for its bi-annual art award, the Samdani Art Award. Through the open call, 20 semi-finalists will be identified by the Delfina Foundation and the Samdani Art Award 2020 guest curator, Philippe Pirotte, Rector and Professor of Art History at the Städelschule Academy of Fine Arts in Frankfurt, Germany. Supported by Goethe- Institut, Philippe Pirotte will then further narrow this to 10 finalists following one-to-one sessions with each of the semi-finalists.

Each of the 10 participants will be given a production budget to create new work which will be exhibited at the fifth edition of the Dhaka Art Summit at the Shilpakala Academy from the 7 to 15 February 2020. Each of the finalists will be prominently featured in the Dhaka Art Summit catalogue, and will have their exhibited work(s) and portfolio evaluated by international jury board members, which will be announced in March 2019.
The winner of the Samdani Art Award will receive an all-expenses paid, six-week residency during summer 2020 at the Delfina Foundation in London. While only one artist will receive the Samdani Art Award to attend the residency, the short-listed artists will be eligible for the other international opportunities with Dhaka Art Summit partner organizations. After the summit, the 10 participants will receive a residency at the Srihatta: Samdani Art Centre and Sculpture Park in Sylhet.

Deadline: 15 January - 15 February 2019
