Cres Fleming, with his dog Stella, waves to Durango & Silverton Train Locomotive 486 as it passes the spot where the 416 fire started near Hermosa, Co. Fleming, who lives just minutes away, was on the scene moments after the fire started on June 1st and tried to put it out with a converted truck carrying 200 gallons of water. But the fire backed by 35mph winds took off up the steep hill. The location of where the fire started is to the left in this photo. Fleming believes embers from the train's smokestack ignited the 5,400-acre wildfire. He also loves the train and wants it to keep running. The train, an economic driver for Durango and Sliverton, is now a contentious topic in community. ⠀

The line at the Build-A-Bear in Park Meadows shopping center stretched down, back and around on the second floor. The company had a promotion where plush bears could be purchased at a price matching a customer’s age. Malls across the U.S. and Canada were so overwhelmed by the number of customers that showed up that they shut down the promotion. More photos in our bio link. ⠀

The Morgan family has lived on a 350-acre ranch near La Veta for more than 40 years, having purchased the land in 1977. But when the Spring Creek fire began heading toward their property and home Thursday evening, they had only two and a half hours to evacuate. Larry Morgan grew up there, he buried his parents in a small cemetery there, his daurghter took her senior pictures there, and his grandson had his first Christmas there. Four generation's worth of memories. “The land is what shocked me,” he said. “When we walked up to the cemetery and up through the land, I couldn’t recognize it. It was like walking on another planet. It was just burned to dust." Read their story in our bio link. ⠀

A FASTER trainee Jerry Walker, a high school principal from Oklahoma, fires his handgun on a gun range during a training session at Flatrock Training Center in Commerce City, on June 12, 2018. At least 30 Colorado school districts and charter schools allow teachers to carry guns, but no statewide training standards regulate them. Denver Post reporter @lizzy_hernaddez called every school district in Colorado to see how they are navigating guns in schools. Read the full story in our bio link. Since the Spring Creek fire broke out early last week, Dr. Rosemary "Romy" Nicoletta has helped evacuate more then 200 horses and livestock. In all the commotion an injured horse reflexively kicked her in the eye Wednesday night as she bent down to treat its wounded leg, but she got back up and continued working. It's merely a symptom of the sudden chaos forced upon the animals of Costilla and Huerfano counties as the massive blaze continues to rage. That same day Nicoletta ventured onto the torched mountain side in search of horses that had to be left behind in the rush to evacuate. The horses were found uninjured at the top of a mountain near the ranch.⠀

“I am blown away,” Nicoletta said. “There are some things like this that defy logic. There’s always these little miracles.”⠀

At Shooters Grill, in Rifle, the award-winning barbecue comes with a gun on the side. The restaurant’s waitstaff, while serving brisket and cornbread, wear holstered — and loaded — sidearms. The fact that both the food and the servers pack heat has made the eatery famous around the world, drawing diners from overseas and vacationers who drive in from Canada.
