Darla  Journeying with God through it all 💗 + Doing my part: Leader, Educator, Giver + I build solutions. And like to look good doing it. 📍Jersey to DC

On this day last year, Quentin and I spent Father’s Day with my family. He had already spent much time with my parents in DC, but he wanted to drive the 2 and a half hours so he could gain a deeper understanding of where I come from, see my childhood home and finally know what I’m talking about when I say I’m from “small town Bridgeton, NJ.” .
I convinced my mom, who always wants to come to DC because she’s “bored” 😂 to let us come up there instead. We ate about an hour away from our house because there aren’t many restaurants in Bridgeton before heading to my childhood home. While waiting for our meal, I snapped this pic of Quentin and my dad chatting as they normally do. .
Some may see this picture and think it’s simply two men who are important to me sharing a conversation. But when I see this photo, I see my dad - a man who never knew his dad and was raised by his grandmother, who met and loved my mother wholeheartedly and loved and raised my brother as his own, and from that love came my sister and I.
Today in church Pastor Donnell shared, “I know what it feels like to grow up and feel like you have a hole the size of the Grand Canyon in your heart because your heart isn’t filled the way God intended.” My dad knows that hole all too well and over the course of his life has filled it with the love and grace of God and passed that onto me. Happy Father’s Day, dad! ❤️

Last night was a momentous celebration! My friend, brother and classmate (BHS Class of 04!!) @cleezemartin tied the knot with his forever love @dboo_yay! Congrats on starting your next chapter as Mr. & Mrs. 🎉🙌🏽🤵🏽👰🏾 #cleonnaeverafter

This is us

Classic love

“They tried to bury us, they didn’t know we were seeds.” @keziamw, Quentin, myself and a group of young black professionals from across the country spent yesterday evening at The Greenwood Cultural Center learning about the Tulsa Race Riots that occurred during Memorial Day Weekend in 1921. Over the course of several days, white Tulsans armed with hate led a massacre which destroyed what was at the time the most thriving black community in the US. Businesses, churches and homes were burned to the ground and hundreds of African Americans were killed and many more injured. But what wasn’t killed during those days was our spirit - a spirit that is alive and well in us.
