This is me on the roof of World Trade Center 1 (South Tower) looking north up Manhattan Island, about six months before it came down in 2001.
What struck me then, and still does now, was the sheer size of those buildings. It's hard to comprehend building anything that tall. They were giants, even in a city like New York.
I feel honored that I got to live in the city before and after. I experienced New York's cocky swagger in all it's glory; then brought down to it's knees; and then the wave of community, brotherhood, kindness and strength that followed. I haven't lived there for a long time, but in my heart, I'll always be a New Yorker.
