Looking back now... it happened. It really happened.
And tens of thousands of people are still reeling with the aftermath of Irma in the 904.
Many are still without power, which is easy to complain about. (We're guilty.)
But the days of power loss around the city and the subsequent discomforts they bring are nothing when compared to people who had waves from the St.Johns crash through their living room.
Having no electricity is paddy-cakes compared to having to wade chest deep out of your front door in cold, murky water because taking shelter in your house is no longer an option.
A few hot, sleepless nights are nothing compared to having your entire neighborhood submerged, as we personally witnessed in the Ortega area. Pulling your wet and destroyed items out of your house through a thick sludge of mud and sediment, toward the street where hundreds of other piles of people's unforgettables are tossed is crazy. Thousands of memories locked in possessions, saturated and forced to be remembered instead of collected. Millions of dollars worth of wall busting renovation for months and years to come.
Many will bounce back, but some will never recover.
We can say things like "We will rebuild!" and "Dammit these lights!", but in reality, there were extreme casualties.
The storm was also a very good warning to us that if a Category 3-5 hurricane ever hits Jacksonville directly, especially from the East or the South, it's going to be SERIOUS TROUBLE. If this ever looks to be the case, just try to get out of town at all costs, especially if you live near the water or in low-lying areas.
This post goes out to anyone that lost everything and actually has the ability or the desire to view their Instagram and see it.
Even coming back to our own Instagram accounts and getting things rolling again seems somewhat inconsiderate and unimportant.
We love you, 904. ❤️
