This may be a controversial issue and for the longest time I did not respond to these type of comments. Maybe I will regret writing this but I thought I would start using my page to speak up for the things I believe in. I often see comments saying “adopt don’t shop” or “don’t buy pedigree dogs when many dogs die in shelters”. As much as agree this situation surrounding shelter dogs is truly heart breaking; I really hate this nanny state culture where people think it is ok and appropriate to tell others (especially strangers) how to live and what they should do.
What life choices they should make. It is ok to be passionate about rescuing and shelter dogs, it is ok to be passionate about pedigree dogs, it is ok to do both – to adopt and to buy from a breeder. As long as you make a sensible and thought out decision. The thing is I believe EVERY dog deserves a fantastic, loving home regardless of the circumstances in which they where brought home or born. There is this mentality by some people that every breeder just wants money and does not love their dogs - not every breeder is bad, not every breeder is good as we well know.
Not every shelter dog is going to fit with exactly what a person or family is looking for. When purchasing a puppy it is so important to support the people / breeders who really love and care for their animals, people who live and breathe for their breed and their well being. People who carry out the relevant health/home checks and take responsibility for the dogs they breed, not just for the 8-12 weeks of rearing but for the rest of their life. I would always take back a dog I had bred without hesitation and ensure that they never, ever ended up in a shelter. Bringing a puppy home, or any dog for that matter is a truly magical experience. To some who cannot have children or choose not to have them, a dog is the closest they will ever get to that bond.. (continued in comments)
