Lady Bird’s ignition was started for the last time today.
The 21-year-old Buick Regal suffered from chronic breakdowns, ugly looks from passersby, and mounting debt incurred by the car’s hapless owner, which ultimately led to her towing and scrapping Dec. 31, 2017.
Since 1996, Lady Bird has traveled more than 150,000 miles, most recently in the Greater New York region where she commuted her driver at least 50 miles a day to and from work. On the day of her towing, this picture was taken on her good side where scars from a set of keys had mostly subsided and one remaining hub cap gleamed in the snow.
Lady Bird was preceded in death by her previous driver, Pat Quinn, and some other guy who owned the car before her. She is survived by her driver’s new-ish vehicle, a 1995 Toyota Camry.
A memorial service is being held on Instagram and Facebook. In lieu of flowers, Lady Bird was donated to @wnyc and #carsintoprograms.
