I was watching Winning on Netflix and there's a scene where Martina Navratilova relates a story where she is asked "why are you so competitive?" And her answer is "well, what's the alternative?". I think there's a lot to be said about approaching life with the humility to know your strengths and weaknesses. But I also think striving to be the best version of yourself is the surest path to happiness.
As she said, there is no alternative to competition. Otherwise the result is mediocrity. Whether you CrossFit competitively, for fun, for longetivity, in a box or at home, I like to the think the members of this community stuck with it out of a sense of wanting more from themselves.
We won't all make the Games, but we can all be better than yesterday. We can all compete against our past selves with an eye on the future.
Last year I participated in the Open even with a wrist injury, and this year, I'm ready. And more importantly, happy that I'm still improving.
