Chinese tech giant, Huawei, could back away from Western countries if it continues to face restrictions, the company's Chairman Liang Hua warned world leaders in Davos.

One of the world’s top smartphone makers, Huawei is also a leader in telecom infrastructure — particularly in the race for 5G.

Huawei has been accused of spying and tech theft by many different countries and the accusations have intensified in recent weeks amid the tense U.S.-China trade dispute.

Some experts are starting to worry that the trade war may turn into a "tech war." “I can tell you, after the Huawei events, all the Chinese money into Silicon Valley stops. And no U.S. money will want to invest into China either,” one academic cautioned.

In 2013, a $25 billion deal closed to take Dell Technologies out of the limelight — and away from the pressure of its investors. The company was struggling, and this bold move gave the PC maker time to rethink and reposition.

Half a decade later, Chairman and CEO Michael Dell says he’s done just that.

Dell, which has a market cap of about $32 billion, has invested more than $21 billion in R&D over the last 5 years and paid down $14.4 billion in debt. And Dell claims the company’s investments aren’t slowing down anytime soon. “We’re outgrowing the market... we’re in a very good spot.” The company is “very much ready” to be public again, its CEO says, and he is very excited about what’s to come. Economic risks are accelerating around the globe, says IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde. These include the U.S.-China trade war, Brexit and China’s slowing economy. “Six months ago these were threats, but they were not at the level of magnitude we have now,” Lagarde told CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Now we are seeing the ripple effects these issues are having on the global economy, she said. Among them: tariff increases that are shaking up markets and boosting volatility. “There is a compounding effect to all this. Market values have changed dramatically over the last few months,” she points out.

That’s why the IMF modestly cut its global growth forecast for 2019 to 3.5% from 3.7%. Watch the interview, at the link in bio. *

Mercedes has loaded its second-generation CLA coupe with new digital technology, including the its first semiautonomous driving system. Speak the system’s wake words, “Hey, Mercedes,” and it comes to life.
With a starting price tag at under $30,000, the CLA’s launch in 2013 brought in a wave of young, first-time luxury buyers Mercedes hopes will move up to more expensive models in the years to come. A visually striking coupe-like sedan, the CLA quickly became the fastest-growing model in the Daimler subsidiary’s history.

The 2020 CLA is slightly bigger than the original coupe and will have the ability to operate hands-free under specific conditions, primarily on divided highways. It even can make a pass automatically; the driver simply tapping on the turn signal when operating in semiautonomous mode.

The 70% tax rate on earnings above $10 million proposed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has the elite financiers attending Davos worried. “It’s scary,” Scott Minerd, global chief investment officer for $265 billion Guggenheim Partners, said in an interview, and “actually very real.”⠀

Others were more dismissive, like Stephen Schwarzman, the billionaire CEO of private equity giant Blackstone and Republican megadonor, who sarcastically said that he is “wildly enthusiastic” about AOC’s proposal.⠀

Ocasio-Cortez took little to no time to respond on Twitter, where she drew attention to our article. Swipe right to read her tweet, or visit the link in bio to see what others at Davos had to say.⠀

Seth Klarman, a hedge fund billionaire some call the next Warren Buffett, wrote a sobering letter warning his investors of global tensions, rising debt levels and political divides. “The seeds of the next major financial crisis (or the one after that) may well be found in today’s sovereign debt levels,” he said. He pointed out that total U.S. government debt now exceeds GDP, a level that other countries like Canada, France, Britain and Spain are approaching.

The letter created a buzz at the annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

Oceans are warming faster than expected and its setting new records.

Man-made greenhouse gas emissions are warming the atmosphere, according to the overwhelming majority of climate scientists, and a large part of the heat gets absorbed by the oceans. These temperatures are damaging to marine life. Extra warmth can reduce oxygen in the oceans and damages coral reefs that are nurseries for fish, the scientists said. Also, warmer seas release more moisture that can stoke more powerful storms. “Global warming is here, and has major consequences already. There is no doubt, none!” You can read more, at the link in bio. *

A small company out of Columbus, Ohio is trying to let people fly as easily as they can drive. That’s why they developed the Surefly, a helicopter that is as easy to fly as a drone.

The Surefly is largely computer controlled and pretty much the only thing the operator does is turn the joystick-like control to point where they want to go. So, it’s also like a video game!

What do you think? Is driving as simple as flying a drone? Would you trust your neighbor with an Octocopter? Leave your thoughts in the comments below. 🚁🤔 *

Are you ready for these numbers?

The wealth of billionaires increased by $762 billion in 2017 — a sum which is enough to end extreme poverty around the world seven times over.
82% of the total wealth created went to the top 1%, while the bottom 50% of individuals saw no increase in their wealth at all.
And a mere 42 of the world’s wealthiest people have the same amount of wealth as the bottom 3.7 billion people.
What do you think about these numbers? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
