When William Bullard took photos of Celia Perkins and her family in Worcester at the turn of the century, he never envisioned his work would end up being the focus of a major exhibition at the @worcesterartmuseum or the subject of an undergraduate history seminar at @clarkuniversity.

More than 100 years later, undergraduate students in Professor Janette Greenwood’s Problems of Practice history seminar worked with the descendants of Celia Perkins and other people of color who were photographed by Bullard to contribute to the museum’s exhibition, “Rediscovering an American Community of Color: The Photographs of William Bullard.” The exhibition opens Saturday, Oct. 14, and runs through Feb. 25, 2018. Greenwood (see fourth photo) co-taught the course with Nancy Burns of the museum.

Students pictured include Toni Armstrong ‘19 and Alex Jeannotte ‘17 (second photo, with Perkins descendants Wendy Byfield and Kim Perkins Hampton), and Armstrong and Alice Dillon ’19 (fourth photo, with Greenwood at the museum). Read more at

As an environmental journalist and travel writer for Africa Media, Marissa Callender '18 experienced many firsts during her LEEP internship. It was the first time she was photographed with an elephant, the first time she met an Olympic gold medalist (@m_phelps00) and the first time she came face-to-face with a great white shark (swipe for the video). “When I began my journey to South Africa, I was nervous but determined to enter every experience with an open mind,” she says. “I knew there would be many things to come that I had never encountered before.” #clarkuniversity

Happy World Smile Day! Did you know that the iconic yellow smiley face was created right here in Worcester? Freelance artist Harvey Ball designed it in 1963 for the State Mutual Assurance Company (now The Hanover Insurance Group) as a way to raise employee morale. He never applied for a copyright or trademark, and earned just $45 for the design.

Ball believed that since the smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion, neither should we — for at least one day each year. He declared the first Friday of October as #WorldSmileDay, which we should devote to smiles and kind acts throughout the world, something particularly needed right now.

Happy birthday, Robert Goddard! The Clark physics professor (and alumnus — M.A. 1911, Ph.D. 1912), also known as the "father of modern rocketry," was born in Worcester on Oct. 5, 1882 and went on to perform his pioneering research at Clark.
On March 16, 1926, at his aunt's farm in Auburn, Goddard successfully launched the first liquid-fueled rocket — ushering in an era of space flight and innovation.

Fun fact: One of Goddard's physics students at Clark was Edwin Aldrin, class of 1915, father of Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Read more about the Aldrins' Goddard connection here: http://bit.ly/2kqcKn2.
