RIP Tom Murphy
A true great has left us. He has left us alone to Whistle in the Dark. The fiercest, most exacting, most precise of voices whose hunger for truth was only matched by his despairing lunge at its elusiveness. A man of brutal humour and gentle surgery who showed us ourselves in both our glory and our necessary ridicule. Beneath it all – the fury, the shadows, the steel and thunder - he cared deeply. He cared for his calling like a priest should and he sang a hymn of such daring and varied voice that when accompanied by the finest instrument actors could provide, the stage would literally quake beneath the weight of lives lived and life’s opportunity lost. We shall miss you Tom and all that you wrought from the Iron of your being and seeing. And at this time we are ever grateful for what you brought and taught us. Our condolences go out to those whom you loved, who loved you in return and who are now left behind to Wake your untimely passing. May the great music of the spheres welcome you home with a crescendo of the highest acclaim and may the daemons accompany you to your rest with a barbaric chorus of vile, low humour!
