Student Spotlight on....Richard Barlion!
Name: Richard Barlion
Nicknames: I have had many through the years but these are the most current. Rico, coco-as in cocodrillo Spanish for alligator because I have short arms, and my favorite Rich-turd
Discipline: Thai Boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, Judo
Years training: 5 years
Rank: Eternal white belt 😂but that's ok a belt is just a hold your pants up. I also like it when people think I'm just a regular white belt and then I give them the business, blue belt tears taste so good
0-1 Muay Thai
Favorite thing about Vision MMA: Vision is an incredible gym, with a short history but some very incredible fighters have come through this gym. It has that old school boxing feel rustic but this is where the best train
Best memory at Vision MMA: Getting to corner Lucy "Big Gertha" Johnston for her fight (I used to help corner a lot and haven't had the opportunity in a couple of years). It's so nerve racking watching your friends fight, and I didn't swear once which is a huge accomplishment! My second best is Marissa Pender kicking me so hard my mouth guard came out.
Little known fact about me: I am married to a Peruvian and my birthday is on Peruvian Independence Day. Also, I used to do standup comedy (I am not good). Best thing about training: Tapping someone, there really is no better feeling, and on the flip side seeing a newer students/ friends progress. Its great when someone gets to a point where they are much better, even surpassing you, and knowing you helped them get there!
Worst thing about training: Injuries, but they are part of the process. I have torn my hamstring, broken my arm and 2 fingers, stitches, countless bumps and bruises, but all I think about is when can I train again.
Person who has had the most impact on your training: I would say Coach Pryor for really introducing me to boxing although my boxing is not great, my hands are so much cleaner and my footwork too. I guess Coach Jeremy Pender too. Also Coach Scott O'Brien and Tyger Banks!
