Everyday I try to walk relatively long distances. I've traced the Highlands grid—every combination—so many times that I'm surprised that every now and then my shoe still catches a lip in the sidewalk, like some neighborhood noob.
.
@tulsiyellowbear and I explore the intricacies of generations-old gardens as the seasons change. Me, equipped with my eyes and wandering mind and she with her nose.
.
A favorite stop is the Lupine Lady House, which is a name I gave it just now—in reality I have no idea if a 'Lady' lives here—but lupines, and other botanicals, there are many. And that book: timeless, if you were so lucky as to read it as a child. (You still can).
.
This morning at this House, the still-low sun wakes the buds and blooms with a center spot; an early solo; awakened and centered.
.
I hope everyone has a productive day - there is still much to grow, and yet our time grows short.

Echium Wildpretii - ("The Tower of Jewels")
.
The plant, which is native to the Canary Islands, grows slow and steady to peak at 6 feet tall over two years.
.
Then, it awaits a period of cool weather in the spring. If the conditions are not right, it might not flower at all.
.
As the heat grew steadily last week, the chances of flowering began to decrease. How would it know when the time was right?—would the 'Tower of Jewls' be able to fulfill its calling and share its color and aromatics with the world? .
.
Yes. The answer is yes.
.
Today hundreds of tiny scented pink flowers are emerging from the soft sage-like leaves of the towering plant. .
.
The soft diffused light from a cool, cloudy day casts a neutral, fulfilling tone. The jewels reach out with shimmering strands.
.
.
.
And soon...
.
.
......the flowers will die.

"It is fortunate, perhaps, that no matter how intently one studies the hundred little dramas of the woods and meadows, one can never learn all of the salient facts about any one of them." - Aldo Leopold
(from the April chapter, in 'A Sand County Almanac')

"In my first thirty years of life I roamed hundreds and thousands of miles. Walked by rivers through deep green grass. Entered cities of boiling red dust. Tried drugs, but couldn't make Immortal; Read books and wrote poems on history. Today I'm back at Cold Mountain:
I'll sleep by the creek and purify my ears."

The spring rain feeds velour carpets like this along the muck-banks of north Chicago's forest districts. Tulsi and I walk down a gravel path surrounded by damp bark and occasional bird whispers. You can hear cars as a soft but ever-present tidal 'whoosh' filling the vacuum the city created with the white noise of brazen individuals...

...At first we were careful—or at least I tried to force the two of us be careful—to not get muddy. She reluctantly heeled at my side, inching ahead only for me to snap her back with a command. The forest was drab.
.
We came to a place where the trail sank into the primordial goop of the forest. In this particular slice of nature, a wash of Bollywood music from a nearby cookout was intensifying the drab vibes of the forest like a defibrillator used on something with a pulse: I knew the forest wasn't dead, but it was sleeping, and I didn't come to wake it. The music felt existentially inappropriate, but then again, I haven't spent much time with Bollywood.
.
So, I had Tulsi sit and stay and watch me cross the log that lay over the mud puddle, then I turned and called a command for her to follow behind - just as I had. She jumped directly into the mud, licked it for good measure and scampered out past me.
.
"Tulsi. You're so dirty...." I said with not just defeat, but withdrawal. My shoulders detached at their hinges and my arms deflated. My gaze stuck at 10° below the horizon, I knew there was no going back. Mud was reality.
.
She runs around and past me, looping, grunting and panting. Her tongue flaps like a cartoon, her lips lightly curled into a grin: "Run you fool, we're alive!" she yells as she loops again, free from my container.

Happy Spring Folks!
.
It's been on and off freezing and bitter for the last few weeks in Chicagoland, where I've been working on projects, but today it's like 75°!!
.
I spotted these first early bloomers while out for a stroll between editing.
.
Is it spring where you are yet?? Anyone know what sort of flowers these are?

We woke to little clusters of snow drifting by the picture window in my friends' living room. We've been here for two weeks and each day has felt like a marathon in my mind. Running thoughts between friends and family; between my career and my art; between love and sadness.
.
I'm almost always tired because sleep somehow keeps pulling the short straw in my subconscious's parlor games.
.
It was coming down in a way that made me feel like Nature was lifting an eyebrow and scoffing at my banal struggles: "Can you even fathom the infinitude of this snow?"
.
"No, I can't."
.
Ready to take @tulsiyellowbear outside, she looks at me with an inquisitive head tilt. Shuffling toward the door robotically I pause mid-step. My momentum requires my legs to flex gently as I 'about face' and reverse course to retrieve some thick socks and my Bean boots.
.
Newly shielded with down and wool we head to a little strip of quiet in big city Chicagoland. A foot of powder has fallen and tulsi squints between the flakes as we carve little dusty canyons into the forest.
.
We're alone, but we're home.

These are my boots.
.
It was a drizzly day in the summer of 2015. I found them on a shelf at an economy shoe store in Rapid City, South Dakota and wore them out of the store and into a Famous Dave’s BBQ where I drank a Moscow Mule and ate mediocre brisket.
.
They kept my feet dry on drizzly days like these once. They were office shoes but they saw the grasses and muds of the prairie after work. I’m not a shoe connoisseur. They sat by the front door, without challenge, waiting for me. They were my daily shoes.
.
They were my daily shoes 18 months later when I packed the rental car with my clothes and my dog, stepping through slushy Denver streets, the formerly-oiled leather now wicking brine eagerly from the sidewalks. The edges wearing from miles and miles.
.
They were my only shoes and so they were my work boots when I arrived in Goshen for my home remodeling gig. Climbing scaffolding and stairs the rubbery soles wore thinner. One day something poked through the heel into a cavity. From then on, a light rattle followed us when the shoes moved quickly.
.
The seam on the inside of my left shoe separated one day as I walked up the soupy driveway. Wet with thawed winter snow, I placed a few drops of water-activated gorilla glue and pressed down firmly. “Hold on,” I said. “You’re almost there.”
.
The smooth soles slide like skates on the ice. A few times I left them on while walking the dog, knowing full well they'd soak up the snow and dampen my feet. .
I started wearing my rubber boots to work, ol’ reliable left by the front door, semi-retired; a house-shoe.
.
A few weeks later I pushed a paint tray clear of a door with my foot, placing two racing stripes on the side. ‘Recovery is an illusion,’ I thought. ‘This is just another part of the cycle, you’re almost there.’
.
On Monday I packed someone else’s car again. Time to bounce back west in the slow, yet enormous Pong game which has become my life’s routine. The shoes now worn, soggy and seams splitting, I took a portrait.
.
“You made it,” I said. With a smile I dropped them into an empty garbage can. The sound echoed in my mind.

2016 wasn't great for a number of reasons, and with the news of Carrie Fisher's death today it seems like the year is trying for a world record of pain. But that is but one perspective.
.
This year also brought me to see family and friends around the country, to hike peaks with my sister, to explore my new city of Denver, and the ability to work only for myself all year (and didn't go broke!... yet).
.
'Bad' is temporary and soluble; even when the view is cold and barren there is still light, there is still color, and before we'll know it, both the past and the present will have changed.
