Working on a thistle.
As I've said, going out searching and capturing anything of interest is my real passion. It's the editing that I tend not favor so much. I like the comfortable, the known. I've had it in my head that changing elements, major changes to tones and colors was altering the pure picture. However, I've seen what some fantastic editing can do. Even to a very simple subject, can turn from mediocre to simply outstanding.
We all see things so very differently and not just in pictures. Even recently, standing a few feet apart from another photographer has brought two very different images.
It's a beautiful part of photography. Each picture becomes your very own. The camera is just a tool. It only captures the light you allow.
I found this thistle on my way back from Austin. I had focused on one far more beautiful, far more vibrant. The purple tones just popped out against the amber wheat. This one on the other hand was off to the side as if it were hiding. After a second glance I saw it had its own unique beauty.
Too often we ignore what's right next to us. The things we tend to ignore with a little help become quite stunning. I didn't change much of anything but a little editing can really help.

Talking myself out of a Sunset?
Stepping out to find something interesting, hopefully a real sunset with brilliant golden colors, I felt the drops of rain. They were light but the clouds were low and thick. I paused thinking how rare anything worth capturing would be. I headed out to one of my favorite spots to relax. I knew even if nothing fascinating turned up I would at least get to enjoy the evening. I listened to the wind blowing through the masts of the sailboats and watched the birds fly by. The cool wind splashed the water ashore. I had about an hour before the sun would finally meet the horizon. I allowed myself to soak in everything including the couple holding hands searching for a quiet, private spot.
Finally the sun showed its bright rays and and lit up the sky with a few clouds left. The wind worked to clear a path for the sun to do its job and paint the sky.
After getting home and downloading my pictures I was thinking again about the great aspects of photography, the journey, the time spent just enjoying our strange yet beautiful world. With all the chaos and strife going on, it's such a great way to forget those things, even if for just moments. The more I go out the less I'm affected by the negative. The photograph, after all, is just a document, proof of a wonderful time.

Waiting for the sun.
I was exhausted from a very busy weekend, however when I got an offer to go scouting for something interesting to capture, I jumped at the chance. @cfitchfoto and I had found some interesting views last week so I was hoping to do the same. Neither of us had photographed on this portion of Lake Ray Hubbard so we decided to give it a try. After a short hike without anything too exciting, we moved a bit further around the lake.
The clouds were quite heavy around the sun, but that can also make some amazing, brilliant sunsets. Initially I was a bit disappointed it hadn't turn out as I had hoped, but as usual, things always work out. In this case maybe better. I loved how the sky made a V shaped cloud formation, reaching down and touching this lonely tree. In the far background the shore made an interesting boarder across the lake.
You can always review your pictures in camera, but I always enjoy opening them up later at home, somehow expecting something much better. I'm not sure if that's optimism or false hope, but it never changes. As I reviewed them I got excited as if I had in fact planted the tree and painted the sky, of course none of which is true. I had my own sunset in mind but nature had its own plan. I'm just glad I was able to capture it. Have a great day and I hope you find something worth rushing home to see.

A quick stop never is so quick.
My rides or trips on the road are far more rare than I would like, so when I notice something or rather anything of interest, I always pull over. What's meant to be a quick "shot" always takes much longer. The more your look the more you find. Living in an urban area makes these trips so much fun. I hadn't seen those beautiful golden fields of grain in far too long. I wasn't sure if it's a wheat, rye or barley, but they're beautiful.
I find whenever I get close I simply have to get closer, and then even closer. I brought several lenses and thought it would be a good practice opportunity with my only real ultra-wide lens. It's an Irix 15mm f/2.4 (which is a mathematically a very unusual aperture). I wanted to be able to get both close, yet see the true background of these beautiful golden fields. It doesn't do it full justice but it's a small glimpse as to how they glowed in the sun.
I'm sure the farmers hate these pesky weeds, but I was thrilled to see them and their unique beauty. Everything in life has its own beauty if we just get closer and are willing to take the time, you'll notice their stunning unique beauty. I couldn't help but notice the intricacies of this common everyday thistle.
Enjoy your day and don't forget to stop and check out a thistle or two.

Enjoying the drive home.
While driving home I was trying to better understand the concept of inspiration. Why is it at times we feel inspired? Sometimes I find things that really make me feel energized yet other times there's simply nothing. How many times do we end up using a computer, searching for interesting, unique spots to find our art.
I thought about those times I truly felt inspired and realized it was always the times Where I was out actively searching, working at my craft where I felt inspired. Nothing has come to me to be captured through my lens. I've alway had to search for it. I can't count how many times I've felt as if I wouldn't find anything that day or night and then simply walking to my car I find it. Keeping our eyes and mind open are key. We certainly won't always find that 5 star, single photograph, but by not searching we get nothing.
The drive home was such a fun, inspiring time that the normally three hour drive took six. I'll share some of these over the next few days.
I also want to say how much I truly appreciate all the wonderful comments. Thank you so much for the support. Seeing your work also inspires me and keeps me searching new places and which helps me refine my skills.
Thank you!

Waiting for graduates.
How do you make a graduation ceremony interesting to someone completely unattached to the event? Sitting there waiting for the graduates to come into the auditorium, I was looking for something worth capturing. I wanted to be able to find something worth sharing with my son for the future and help him remember the event in a unique way.
It was nice seeing the excitement on the faces of the young, optimistic, energetic graduates ready to tackle the world and cause lasting change. It takes time and experience to become numb to these things and realize it's not quite that simple. Finding unique ways to continue that challenge in our daily lives may not be quite how we once envisioned. Life happens. Perhaps we don't affect change the way we once strived, but many still do even if it's in a small 2"X3" post we share here daily. It certainly will never create world peace, it doesn't cure cancer (at least not mine) but it touched us in some way and that's certainly worth sharing.
In the end I may not have fully achieved my goal in pictures but perhaps it was my support and presence that might just have.
Have a great Saturday.

It's Throwback Thursday. Having worked last night, I found a picture I had overlooked. However, my mind has been completely overtaken by the news of Chris Cornell's shocking death. It has me at a near loss of words this morning. The news is just so unbelievable.
A true artist has the ability to touch you deeply whether in with lyrics, music, visual arts or more. His music and incredible lyrics spoke to me deeply at times. I will always have it but it's the music he never wrote that I'll truly miss.
I was looking at the fact this flower was brighter, better focused and stood out above the rest. Perhaps an awful, trivial example, but it's how I felt about someone that brought me some great moments with his music and who's lyrics taught me to never be afraid to try. Putting yourself out there isn't easy. You're naked for all to see and judge. Something many of us are taught to guard heavily.
If you get a moment today, listen to a song or two of his. It's hard to pick a favorite. Two come to mind and I've listened to them and more, I am the Highway and Hunger Strike were at the top of the very long list. If you have a favorite please leave it in the comments. Thank you!

This is a shot from my get together with Chris a great photographer and new friend I met here on IG. We used the TPE app and found a fantastic spot with great views of both downtown and the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge. As the sun had set we took turns watching for the train while we captured unique views of downtown and the Bank of America Plaza building. It was so interesting to notice how different we saw the same view. Having someone who will give you feedback and ideas has been really rewarding for me. As I've mentioned before, it's so easy to get into your own routine and visit the same places. If you have the opportunity, get with someone you can trust to be honest about your work and approach. Sharing ideas, perspectives and styles can only help you grow, both in life and in your hobbies.
Have a great Wednesday! Let's see what pictures it brings. - 85mm 1.0 sec's at f/5.6 -

I thought I would break from the shallow depth of field and soft bokeh I love seeing and photographing. Instead I decided to work on some architecture and composition with lines, negative space, light and reflections. I think too many times we may stick with safe subjects that we feel may get approval. Putting yourself out there in life and trying something different doesn't have a safety net. It doesn't have to be something that wows everyone but gets you to try something new.
Heading downtown I was hoping for some interesting shadows and a beautiful golden sun setting through some of the skyscrapers. It didn't happen but I found some interesting lines and reflections.
As a lover of architecture, I can't help but wonder who made the buildings, what techniques were used, why the architect chose the design and other questions that drive most crazy. These buildings, Republic Towers I & II, were built in the 1954 and at the time were the tallest buildings west of the Mississippi. The building on the left remains the tallest all residential buildings in Dallas.

Stoop to smell the flowers.
I did my routine evening light search by trying to capture some street photography. I've met some interesting people, regulars who've made the street their home as well as others I find walking about. I stopped and spoke to several I had gotten to know. They are always entertained by the fact I carry around a camera. A guy named Howard asked why I still come down "You've already seen everything and everyone here man!" I explained that every day is different.
Even though I found a few subjects that I felt good about, I just didn't feel the same as if I really captured something too magical. That's not very uncommon though. As I had almost reached my car I saw a lonely pot of flowers in the darkness. At first glance it looked very ordinary. Nonetheless I got down lower and stooped, facing some oncoming headlights. It somehow brought them to life.
You can reach your own analogies but it left me thinking about focus and getting lower and closer to people and life, how perspective changes everything.
Have a great Monday!

First of all, Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers here. Yesterday evening I got help with a new set of eyes. I had posted about wanting to meet with some new photographers. Instead I met with Chris @cfitchfoto a photographer who came with years of wonderful experience. I knew from seeing his work he had talent but after meeting I got a new appreciation for his focus and passion for photography. Check out his profile and you'll see what I mean.
The late afternoon started with me waking up and hurrying to the meeting spot. We the drove to find our destination. After arriving I quickly impressed him tremendously with my incredible camera which has this most advanced feature. It has this icon which popped up and told me I had left my SD card back in my car. How fancy is that? 😜 Once again I had forgotten something critical, this time my digital film. 😩😤😡 Yeah he was so impressed he loaned me one of his. I was red faced but terribly grateful. Driving the short distance back would have made us lose what we came for.
I started off learning about an interesting app where you can plot out your position according to the Suns path amongst other fascinating features like the moon, sunset times, etc. it's called TPE. It was using the app that we found a great spot neither of us had been. While scouting we enjoyed chatting about gear and our passion for photography. We ended directly behind the Lew Starret Justice Center (Dallas Co. Jail) A train runs past and towards downtown which is always fun to capture. As we chatted I was noticing how the backlight was illuminating the grass and loved seeing the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in the background. All in all another great adventure in light exploration.

Yesterday evening I got up feeling ready for a change in scenery.
I decided to alter my recent visits to the lake and some of the other areas I've been exploring and head downtown and either do some street photography or capture architecture in the evening light. Playing it by ear I headed out and parked in the Arts District. After finding only minor things to capture I really wasn't feeling very inspired. I walked around the Klyde Warren Park and still nothing. I felt I had made a mistake and decided to head to my car and maybe back home. I was missing my boys who were elsewhere this weekend and it left me pretty gloomy. Just as I left I passed this area with a large water fountain. There in the midst was this little boy having an amazing time chasing the water from fountain to fountain. He had invented his own game. You could see the joy on his small face as he bounced back and forth like Tigger in the Hundred Acre Wood. On the surface was this bright golden/yellow light which illuminates the water as it shoots through the air. He would run to his mother, wait till the water came out and quickly race back. The water would stop and back to his mom he would go. He paused for a moment and placed his face down into the light as if light was hiding from him. I couldn't help but laugh and catch his excitement. I quickly snapped a shot. Afterwards I spoke with the mother and offered to share a picture.
Unfortunately photographing children, isn't easy for a guy. So far I've been very lucky and no one has been harsh or skeptical. Usually I post people pictures on another profile, but I couldn't resist this one. At the end it was a small boy that put a smile on my face and lifted my spirits.
Have a great day and remember if you're new to photography or perhaps just want to get together for a photography shoot, I'm going to be available tomorrow as well as Sunday evening.
