Ashtanga yoga crash course day 15: Chaturanga
If you're struggling with strong chaturangas throughout your practice, try bringing your knees to the ground. This is an option if your lower back is collapsing in Chaturanga or in your transitions from upward dog to downward dog, it's usually an indication that you need more core strength. Pull your belly button towards your spine by engaging your uddiyana bandha (lower abdomen) this will massively help protect your lower back and Strengthen your core. Lower your knees to the ground to help you on low energy days or until you gain more strength in your core. .

Surya Namaskara A and BπŸ™πŸ»β˜€οΈβœ¨
Your Ashtanga practice starts with 10 sun salutations, 5 A and 5 B followed by the standing sequence. Mastering the sun salutations β˜€οΈ is crucial to your practice and some people spend their whole lives just doing this part of the primary series.
They are intended to warm you up for your practice, especially Surya Namaskara B. Remember to let your breath lead you through each pose.

Spend 5 breaths in downdog for surya namaskara A and 5 breaths in your second downdog for Surya namaskara B β˜€οΈπŸ™πŸ»βœ¨I didn't have space to draw them both so I am giving you a collage of sun salutations mermaids instead! Hope you like them πŸ’πŸΌ

Jumping back is a crucial part of sun salutations β˜€οΈ and vinyasas in the primary series. Use your new knowledge of the bandhas (engaged pelvic floor and lower abdominal) and your Ujjayi breathing for an effective jump back.
1️⃣EXHALE: come into you forward fold with hands planted firmly on the ground βœ‹πŸΌπŸ€šπŸΌ
2️⃣INHALE: look ahead of your palms as you throw your butt over your head and use your mulabandha and uddiyana bandha to lift your legs off the ground and launch them into Chaturanga dandasana πŸš€ πŸš€ πŸš€
3️⃣EXHALE: lower down in your chaturanga
It will seem impossible but I promise it's not πŸ™…πŸΌπŸ‘πŸ»βœ¨πŸ™πŸ»try practicing throwing your butt against the wall, while looking forward to get the sensation of the jump back. ✈️ everyone's jumpback journey is different. So happy to be breaking into the poses. 🌞 the primary series is broken down into 3 sequences (standing postures, seated and finishing sequence) samasthiti is your starting posture for the primary series. Chant your opening mantra with your hands to your heart πŸ™πŸ»πŸ’•βœ¨and then begin with Samasthiti. Though it looks easy. Every part of your body is engaged, from your toes pressing together to the lengthening of your neck and upper back. Ashtanga yoga is usually practiced in a warm room πŸ”₯πŸ’¦and you can definitely work up a sweat doing this one posture! Try it!

Evening yogis! Hope you're enjoying your mantra, I mean Friday πŸ™„day 11 of the Ashtanga yoga crash course: the opening mantraπŸ™πŸ»βœ¨I used to never know how to do the opening mantra so I never did it. It wasn't until I had a teacher do call and repeat with me (cringe) and then went home to spell it out phonetically that I even began to understand how profound chanting before and after your practice can be. It gives your practice ritual and meaning, as well as a clear start and end point. So I encourage you to chant this before your next 5 sun salutations. This particular mantra acknowledges the teachers who have come before us and Patanjali himself (as in the translator of the yoga sutras) it talks about the challenges we face as beings, that can be removed by the practice of yoga. You can also replace the mantra with your own prayer or positive affirmations. I personally find the Ashtanga opening mantra to be absolutely beautiful and profound, all that takes to give it a try is a visit to your nearest class or YouTube. In Ashtanga yoga, a vinyasa is a transition between poses that warms up the body for intense forward and back bends. Ashtanga yoga series is started with 5 surya namaskara A's and 5 b's (sun salutations) to warm up the body for the following sequence. Throughout the series (in between each seated posture for example) you will continue vinyasas and jumpbacks to keep your body pliable for poses that follow.
