Diet culture turns food choices into a frightening minefield, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Once we strip away all of the fatphobic, food-stigmatizing nonsense that we’ve internalized, we can recognize that food is just food, not a moral battleground. We can start making choices that satisfy us, that bring us pleasure, that give us space to live our lives. Food doesn't need to be about fear. Nourishment doesn't need to involve shame. We can learn to relate to food and our bodies in a much more positive way—and truly, that is our birthright.

We need to have more public conversations about weight bias *period*, but one place where this form of stigma is particularly unacceptable is in the field of eating-disorder treatment and recovery. If ED-recovery providers can't recognize that fatphobia is one of the biggest driving forces behind the illnesses that come through our doors, then frankly we’re walking around with our heads in the clouds. Too many providers are offering "weight management" alongside eating-disorder recovery, not even acknowledging that these two concepts are at complete odds with one another.
--------------------------------------------
Weight stigma—even in the form of "weight management”—drives people to disordered eating. If we really want to help end eating disorders, we need to stop trying to shrink people's bodies. If we can't stop buying into diet culture’s fatphobic beliefs, then we’re part of the problem. --------------------------------------------

The Wellness Diet makes it *seem* like the key to a long and happy life is knowing each and every chemical and additive in your food, but in fact for most of us, that kind of knowledge only leads to fear, overwhelm, and disorder. Sure, it can be helpful to know about basic nutrients to help you build meals and snacks that satisfy, but even being able to implement this gentle form of nutrition knowledge without having diet culture creep in is a pretty advanced move. And The Wellness Diet's obsession with grain-free, egg-free, dairy-free, etc. is just a way to run yourself ragged.
--------------------------------------------
The VAST majority of people *don’t* have any sort of food allergy or intolerance and don’t need to go around cutting out foods. If you have a genuine food allergy or diagnosed digestive issue like celiac disease, of course it’s good self-care to honor that. But if not? Honor the fact that you can be open to all different kinds of foods, from apples to Oreos, and that any digestive discomfort or other symptoms you’re experiencing are *more likely* to be a product of dieting and disordered eating behaviors than they are to be an issue with the food itself.

The Wellness Diet paints “health" as drinking green smoothies and going to expensive fitness classes all the time, but I call bullsh*t. We can't truly hope to improve people’s well-being if we’re not addressing access to things like food, healthcare, shelter, and environments safe from stigma and violence. --------------------------------------------
When it comes to food and body peace, we have to remember that food insecurity creates the same conditions that chronic dieting does, that poor people and BIPOC folks suffer from eating disorders too, that weight stigma is actually a *greater* risk to people’s health than what they eat, and that other forms of stigma and discrimination also cause chronic stress in the body that no “anti-inflammatory” diet is going to fix (and there’s no good science to back up the claim that such a diet even exists, anyway).
--------------------------------------------
Unless we’re considering all these factors, we’re not actually talking about health—we’re just talking about a bougie, exclusionary version of diet culture, and I’m not here for that. --------------------------------------------

Physicians and other medical professionals are just as human as the rest of us, and they're just as vulnerable to cultural bias. They live in diet culture and absorb its fatphobic messages from birth like the rest of us, and it informs their thinking about bodies, their education in medical school, and even the medical textbooks and research articles they read.
--------------------------------------------
Fatphobia is *everywhere,* even in the places we're taught not to question. In fact, I would venture to say that it's even *more* prevalent in doctor's offices than in the world at large; research has shown that doctors and nurses have incredibly high rates of weight bias, and it directly impacts the quality of care they give their larger-bodied patients.
--------------------------------------------
So if your doctor recommends weight loss, remember that they're steeped in diet culture just like everyone else, and don’t take their word as gospel. Instead, ask them about treatments that don’t involve weight loss (or as @ragenchastain would say, “what would you tell a thin person with this condition, and how about we try that?”). Ask them to refrain from weight talk around you. If they can’t honor those requests, you have every right to find a different doctor! --------------------------------------------

There's something truly magical about being able to embrace movement in a way that's free from diet-culture thinking. You don’t have to do instrumental, compulsive exercise in order to change your body—because that kind of movement is actually harmful to your overall well-being, which includes your mental health. You’re allowed to move in any way you like simply because it makes you happy, or helps relieve chronic pain, or just helps you feel more at ease as you go about your life.
--------------------------------------------
Moving our bodies can feel so, so good, and when it's done out of pure joy, it can be a wonderful addition to any self-care routine. Movement *can* be joyful. It can even be magical. We just have to approach it in a new, liberating way.

The fat-acceptance movement was created by and for people in larger bodies, and the movement absolutely needs to center them—but people in *all* size bodies also need fat acceptance. Everyone living in diet culture is in desperate need of fat acceptance. If we lived in a world that embraced larger bodies, we would have more accessible spaces for people in every size body. We'd have a healthcare system that treated people equitably and didn’t make everyone live in fear of weight gain. We'd see far fewer people developing disordered eating in an effort to shrink their bodies. We'd have less fear around food. Every single person would benefit. That's the kind of world I want to see.

There are many potential reasons why any given individual might be in a larger body, from genetics to life circumstances, but trying to pin down the exact cause can actually reinforce the idea that fatness is somehow bad or wrong. Sometimes people are just fat, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Size diversity is a fact of human existence, as much as diet culture tries to fight against it. --------------------------------------------
You can’t tell anything about a person's health—or their life experiences—just by looking at the size of their body. Too many health professionals are taught to pathologize fatness, as though its mere presence *causes* health problems, which we know just isn’t true. (For lots more on that, check out episode 127 of Food Psych, or read the great scientific paper “Weight Science: Evaluating the Evidence for a Paradigm Shift.”) Some people are just fat, and it’s perfectly okay.

Health is a multifaceted, complex thing, and it involves a lot more than what we put on our plates. It's about how we care for ourselves. How we hold space for ourselves. How we learn resilience in the face of trauma. How we nurture ourselves in a *truly* holistic way.
--------------------------------------------
When we talk about our relationships with food, we're not just talking about what we eat. We're talking about mental health. When we internalize diet culture's bullsh*t, it’s not just altering what we eat, it’s also altering how our brains function. By following diet rules, depriving ourselves, and restricting our intake of the foods we love because of diet culture’s admonishments (rather than because of true medical necessity), we begin to chip away at our intuition around food and stop feeling in charge of our own bodies. For some of us, we quickly fall down a deeply disordered rabbit hole.
--------------------------------------------
Ultimately, diet culture tries to sell us its lies under the guise of "health." But if following diet culture's ever-changing rules is actually driving us to disorder and distress, is it really health-promoting? The answer is a resounding no.

In our fatphobic society, too many people think they’re entitled to comment on the food, exercise, and health choices of people in larger bodies, as though those bodies were public property. But that’s total BS. You are allowed to exist in the body you have and take care of it in the ways you choose, without having to endure stigmatizing, unsolicited opinions about it. You don’t have to shrink your body or restrict your eating for anyone. --------------------------------------------
“Anyone" includes health professionals, too, by the way—and it even includes me and the rest of the anti-diet community. Yes, I share what I know about diet culture and how it influences our choices, how fatphobic ideas have shaped the medical and scientific communities’ views on weight, how dieting and restriction leads to disordered eating, and more. I try to help you be informed about the forces that affect your thinking about your body. But at the end of the day, your body is your body, and you get to decide what to do with it. No one else has the right to make those decisions for you. --------------------------------------------

Your body size doesn't determine your worth or value to the world around you. Despite what diet culture claims, being in a larger body does *not* diminish your accomplishments or your worthiness. In fact, it may mean that you've had to work HARDER than folks in smaller bodies in order to be taken seriously and given a fair shot.
--------------------------------------------
This world is not equitable for people in larger bodies. Fatphobia has real, systemic consequences that millions of people have to contend with every day. But those who buy into and perpetuate weight-based stigma are on the wrong side of history. The status quo *is* changing, and I truly believe that one day discrimination based on body size will be widely recognized for the bigotry that it is.

There’s a misconception that, despite its name, Health at Every Size has a size limit. And I get it. Diet culture is always telling us that being in a very large body “causes” poor health, so people assume that HAES really means “health up to a certain size.” In reality, though, nothing could be farther from the truth. The HAES paradigm truly means supporting people in caring for their health (if they so choose) at *every* conceivable size on the spectrum, without making weight loss or weight management the goal. --------------------------------------------
HAES is something that all people in all bodies can practice if it's something that they value and desire. No one, regardless of size, disability, race, gender, etc. is barred from treating their bodies with care, love, and respect. The world at large needs to recognize this, embrace it, and support those who need this message the most. (And if you’re curious about why HAES providers don’t focus on changing or managing weight, check out the episode of Food Psych mentioned in this photo.)
