Meet another one of our #CHDWarriors on this #FeelgoodFriday! ❤️ At her 20-week ultrasound, Heather received the diagnosis that her daughter would be born with congenital heart disease. Staying as hopeful as she could, she trusted he words of #cardiologist Dr. Mary Donofrio, “Come here and we’ll run our own tests, see what comes back and go from there.” Emilee is now 6 years old and has had ten open heart surgeries with four of them being within her first week of life! Some of her favorite things are unicorns, rainbows, mermaids, singing and dancing 🌈🦄🎤! She also adores animals 🐩🐈 and wants to be a vet and a pet-trainer when she grows up!

Dr. Hwang and his team have developed technology that will help kids with an aggressive form of brain cancer. #SWIPELEFT to scan the QR code and vote the technology into the next round of #STATmadness! 📲💻

“Leaving the colorful walls, smiley faces and laughing children to enter the quiet and calm atmosphere settled it for me” ☺️ Meet Dr. Ashraf Harahsheh. After completing rotations in both pediatric and adult cardiology he knew pediatric cardiology was the route for him!

Since joining Children’s National in 2008 as an attending doctor, Dr. Harahsheh has worn many hats. He is currently the director of resident education in the Division of Cardiology, is active in both inpatient and outpatient care and is engaged in clinical research. Although he loves research, his interactions with patients and families are the most rewarding part of his job. “I love to give good news,” said Dr. Harahsheh. “I enjoy seeing a smile on the face of the children and their parents as I assure them they can participate in sports or even become the next president if they like!” Thank you for your commitment to care for our patients and the work you do to educate our residents! ❤️

Coming from a family of medical professionals, today’s #PeopleofChildrens feature was destined to be! Meet Dr. Ian Hovis, one of our rock star #cardiologists! ❤️
Growing up, Dr. Hovis always knew he wanted to be in the medical field with his mom working as a pediatric cardiology nurse and his dad a pharmacist. His grandparents were medical professionals, too! “I was always interested in science, but when I went to college I had the opportunity to open my mind and explore other ways of thinking.” Dr. Hovis double majored in national science and film during his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin. “That was a fun opportunity to explore how an artist approaches a problem versus a scientist.” After completing his residency at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, Dr. Hovis came to Children’s National for a cardiology fellowship and is now an attending doctor. 🏥
His favorite part about his job is the patients he gets to treat. “The diversity really drew me to Children’s because not only do we get to treat the children in the area but children from all over the world, while still being at a top hospital” ❤️
Thanks for all you are doing for our patients, Dr. Hovis. You rock!

“Our 20 week sonogram showed that something was wrong," says Carolyn, mom of 3-year-old Charlie.
After hearing those words and receiving an incorrect diagnosis from a local hospital, Carolyn was referred to Children’s National, where she learned that her baby boy would be born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome #HLHS.
“Dr. Donofrio was extremely reassuring when she told us that there is no reason why we shouldn’t be able to take home a healthy kid,” says Carolyn. “That’s when my perspective of his condition changed for the better.” 😄
Charlie’s treatment included prenatal monitoring and three open heart surgeries after he was born.
While Charlie’s condition is limiting, it doesn’t stop him from enjoying everyday activities. Some of Charlie’s favorite activities include playing with his friends, creating art projects 🖍🖌and baking cookies 🍪
