Two-year-old Zoey Duncan played with her wheelchair while at her family's apartment on Thursday, January 7, 2016. One year before a gunman opened fire in a College Hill Courts apartment, killing a 20-year-old woman and wounding three others, including 1-year-old Zoey Duncan, who barely survived. Zoey was paralyzed from the waist down. A year later, she moved around in a tiny toddler-sized pink wheelchair. Zoey's mother, Bianca Horton, was later shot and killed in 2016, possibly because she was to testify against her daughter's accused shooter, and a witness fund was set up for witnesses of crime in Horton's honor. The snow may have been brief, but a few people in the Chattanooga area still got to enjoy it while it lasted. Staff photographer @doug.strickland captured Isa Baez sliding down her family's icy driveway after an overnight winter storm brought snow to the region Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, in Chattanooga, Tenn.

While many of us will be celebrating Thanksgiving this week with our families, firefighters like Devin Delaney from St. Joseph, Missouri, who works with the Kansas Bureau of Indian Affairs, will be working in the Cohutta Wilderness of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest near Chatsworth, Ga., fighting the Rough Ridge wildfire that has consumed 28,000 acres of mostly wilderness. Staff photographer @doug.strickland was there on Friday as firefighters from across the country and Pureto Rico who were brought in to manage the fire worked to control what is called a slop over. Burning brush rolled off of a hill and over road being used as a fire break overnight, so firefighters created new fire lines and consumed the fire's fuel in the slop over. Firefighters battling the blaze typically work in rotations with new crews coming in every 2 weeks, and countless crews will be spending the Thanksgiving holiday working to manage the low-burning fire, which was started by lightning, as it burns itself out. #wildfires #cohuttawilderness #firefighterlife #chatsworth #forestryservice

It may not exactly feel like winter yet, but nonetheless Friday marks the opening of the new location of Chattanooga's ice skating rink at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Staff photographer Angela Lewis was on hand to capture Dave Guess, with Seasonal Ice in North Carolina, hard at work on Tuesday helping to set the rink up.

In this photo by staff photographer @doug.strickland Stephen Burnside, right, and his mother Izzy place bottles of water in the bed of their pickup truck after having them filled at the Luminary Frostbite Volunteer Fire Department on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, in Luminary, Tenn. Burnside said that while their well water has not completely stopped running, it has turned an ugly brown color. The ongoing severe drought in the region has caused many wells, the primary source of water in the Luminary community, to run dry. TEMA has begun providing water for pickup at the volunteer fire department, and area churches and businesses along with Dayton and Dunlap have also donated water.
