“I monitor the progress of our projects. My job includes collecting data, measuring progress and understanding the challenges faced during the project implementation process. I was brought in to help Challenging Heights build a strong monitoring and evaluation system. Previously, we had been focused on the implementation of our programs but had not paid much attention to collection and utilization of data that could help better inform our future projects.
I took a journey back to review our files on all the children we have rescued so far and reported on them to see trends in the diseases they bring, the psychological challenges they face, families they come from, experiences at the shelter, and how rehabilitation programs accommodate rescued children. We found that the rehabilitation program is effective with a few challenges such as getting professionally trained psychologists. We have counsellors at the shelter house and in extreme cases, we rely on professionals from Accra. Our hope is to hire a full time psychologist in the future.
We realize that the children need to recover what they have lost at the lake. The shelter environment is so protective that when these children go back to their homes, they don’t enjoy the same privileges. Therefore, we are conducting workshops to teach parents how to take care of their children and cater to their needs.”
