Please read this before judging the image and what it represents. I feel that as a nation we can continue to learn, grow and bridge gaps between different cultures. Australia Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the beautiful and diverse country we live in and I believe everyone should be able to celebrate this and show how proud they are to be Australian. For many aboriginal people this day is a reminder of the horrible history of rape, murder and genocide. A lot of people take offence and say it “happened a long time ago and that they had nothing to do with it”. I’m not saying you should feel guilty or sorry, I’m simply just trying to educate the reason why this “date” not “day” is so hard for some to celebrate and feel left out! Wouldn’t it be great for everyone to feel like they can celebrate on the same day how proud they are to be Australian. As a nation we legalised gay marriage because we all came together with equality in our hearts, this is another one of those moments in Australian history where we can work together to do the right thing. With over 40,000 years of history for aboriginal people; (the oldest proven living culture) they deserve to be able to celebrate how proud they are to be Australian too. #changethedate #weallwanttocelebrate please try and see it from their view and imagine how you would feel!
