In this week’s #PeepThatPlant, we’re spotlighting the Eastern columbine (Aquilegia canadensis). 🍃 This wildflower is native to the woodlands and rocky slopes of eastern North America. Its genus name is “Aquilegia,” which comes from the Latin word “aquil” and means “eagle.” It refers to the flower’s red spurs that resemble an eagle’s claw. These spurs — the long, narrow red tubes at the top of the flower — are where the nectar is stored. That’s why this flower is a favorite of hummingbirds and butterflies. Eastern columbines come in a variety of colors, but the native red and yellow kind can be found in Central Park’s three woodlands: the Hallett Nature Sanctuary, the Ramble, and the North Woods. 📝: Senior Zone Gardener Mimi Gunderson

In this week’s #PeepThatPlant, we’re featuring azaleas (Azalea sp.), beautiful spring-flowering shrubs. 🌸 Right now is the perfect time to take a trip along Rhododendron Mile, a stretch of the East Drive between 86th and 94th Streets, because the azaleas are in full swing! Have you spotted them this season in Central Park?

Azaleas bloom in a variety of colors: white, magenta, peach, purple, and pink. These shrubs are grown all over the world for their beautiful flowers, and there are many azalea festivals throughout the world. 📝📷: Senior Zone Gardener Mimi Gunderson

“There is much to be said for cherry blossoms, but they seem so flighty. They are so quick to run off and leave you. And then just when your regrets are the strongest the wisteria comes into bloom, and it blooms on into the summer. There is nothing quite like it. Even the color is somehow companionable and inviting.” — Murasaki Shikibu #CentralParkBloomWatch 📷: @orazzals

The Olmsted Flower Bed, at the south end of the Mall, was created in 1972. 🌷🌼🍃 It commemorates the 150th birthday of Frederick Law Olmsted, co-designer of Central Park.

Kwanzan cherry trees (Prunus serrulata 'Kwanzan') are finally in bloom! 🌸 These trees are stunning in the spring with huge clusters of pink blossoms. The double-flowered pink blooms emerge before the leaves. New leaves are bronze-red — so even if you miss the flowers, this tree still offers a lot of beauty. #PeepThatPlant 📝: Senior Zone Gardener Mimi Gunderson
