AIANY Center for Architecture  AIANY is a membership organization for architects that supports the Center for Architecture, a cultural venue for NYC architecture, design & urbanism.

Cocktails & Conversation is series of dialogues about design that joins an architect with a critic, journalist, curator, or architectural historian to discuss current architecture design issues. Each program includes a custom-crafted cocktail—one inspired by the architect’s work and created especially for this event. Join us on Friday, 9/28, 6:30-8pm for a dialog with Signe Nielsen, Hon. AIANY, RLA, FASLA, and Molly Bourne, RLA, ASLA, from @mathewsnielsen with David Burney, FAIA, of @PrattInstitute Graduate Center for Planning and the Environment! Shown: Pier 42 (NYC). The @PublicArtFund presents Tear of the Cloud, a three-week-long installation in Riverside Park South created by video art pioneer Tony Oursler. Large-scale videos will be projected directly onto the historic West 69th Street Transfer Bridge gantry on the Hudson River, an industrial relic that formerly facilitated the movement of trains from rail yards to river barges. The installation opens to the public on October 10! Image: Courtesy of the Public Art Fund. #publicartfund #tonyoursler @tonyoursler #videoart #publicart #installation

RH New York, The Gallery, Restoration Hardware’s new over 90,000-square-foot retail experience, has opened in the Gansevoort Market Historic District at the intersection of Little West 12th Street and Ninth Avenue. Sausalito, CA-based Backen & Gillam Architects designed a modern steel-and-glass structure rising five floors through the original brick façade. To reach the upper levels, visitors can also ascend a grand double staircase illuminated by an art installation. New York Night, by Alison Berger, is composed of 120 hand-blown crystal teardrop pendants that cascade 90 feet through the six-story staircase. #TBT "It's a very small pavilion, but it questions a lot of the basic things about architecture, like how we think about structure," says AIANY Design Awards juror Ila Berman of the Thinness Pavilion in San Francisco, which won an Projects Merit Award in the 2018 AIANY Design Awards. The new entrance to the Empire State Building (ESB) Observatories @empirestatebldg, located at 20 West 34th Street, was designed to enhance the visitor’s experience. Part of the decade-long Empire State ReBuilding project, the new 18,000-square-foot entrance also helps to alleviate congestion at the building’s main entrance on Fifth Avenue easing the way for tenants and their guests. Visitors are immediately treated to more space, organized circulation, and hints of what will come from the next phases of the redevelopment. By alternately revealing the original structure of the building and integrating key building details into new design, the cross-disciplinary team including @ThincDesign (experience design), @IDEO (design consultant), @thorntontomasetti (structural engineer), and @Corganinc (architect-of-record), has created a new experience for the 87-year-old building and the millions who visit annually. Under the direction of Empire State Realty Trust, the entire Observatory project should be completed in 2019. #architecture #design #empirestatebuilding #observatory #renovation #archilovers #architecturelovers

@AECOM commissioned @WXYstudio to complete the rehabilitation of the step street at East 168th Street in the Bronx in 2015, and @NYCDDC and @NYC_DOT have now reopened it! Fun fact: there are 64 step streets in the Bronx. Step streets are a vital part of the borough’s infrastructure and the East 168th Street Step Street has 102 granite steps in nine separate flights, rising 58 feet in elevation from its lowest point on Clay Avenue to its peak at Teller Avenue. Since 2008 DDC has worked on nine of them and three are currently in the works. Engineering services were provided by Haider Engineering. On the 17th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we're looking at @Snohetta's National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion. Says Snøhetta's Founding Partner Architect Craig Dykers, FAIA, LEED AP: “Our desire is to allow visitors to find a place that is a naturally occurring threshold between the everyday life of the city and the uniquely spiritual quality of the Memorial. It is important that people physically engage with the building and feel that it helps lead them on to other areas of the site and other thoughts about their experiences there.” Read our interview with Dykers in Photo: Jeff Goldberg. #architecture #design #snohetta #911memorial #911anniversary #aiany #faia

Now hosting the 138th U.S. Open, the new 14,069-
seat Louis Armstrong Stadium, located at the National Tennis Center in Queens, is the first naturally ventilated tennis stadium with a retractable roof in the world. Designed by Detroit-based @ROSSETTI, in collaboration with @WSP.USA, the stadium fulfills the vision of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to feature tennis matches in an open, day-lit outdoor environment, as much as possible, and provide weather protection only when necessary. The new stadium replaces the original venue, named in honor of the legendary jazz musician, which hosted tournament matches from 1978 until its demolition in 2016. #architecture #design #usopen #queens #louisarmstrongstadium
