Rolled oats and rye. Enjoy them together as porridge or in baking, rye adds satisfying texture and flavour.

Here is a common question people ask at Farmers Markets.
“What does rye taste like? “
Then, I realize it’s not easy to describe the uniqueness of rye. What words would you use?
See you Sunday at #hastingsparkwfm @vanmarkets

Heritage wheat Marquis is coming to @vanmarkets this Sunday at #HastingsParkWFM
This hard red spring variety was selected here at the Agricultural Research Station in Agassiz over 100 years ago.  It quickly became the most popular wheat in western Canada and was the forerunner of nearly all of Canada's bread wheats.  A number of years ago, we obtained eighty seeds of Marquis from the Canadian seed bank in Saskatoon and have been growing them on year by year.
Radio-Canada (French CBC) made a short documentary about our endeavour. Follow the link in bio to watch.

Can you smell the popcorn? (Here are the images that appear to be missing from the last post)

It seems like nice movie watching weather around Vancouver this weekend. And, of course you’ll need popcorn! Get Dakota Black popcorn @vanmarkets #natbaileywfm tomorrow!

Grain cleaning continues. This is a small seed cleaner, ‘Kipp Kelly’ (we call with endearment) that separates seeds by size.
While our gravity table can complete a majority of final grain cleaning, a small portion of good oat groats are still mixed with groats with husks, which we don’t want.
It is a slower process, but Kipp Kelly sure does a good job to get the oats ready for #coldrolledoats and #steelcrimpedoats !

Appreciation for the colour and structure autumn offers

After a week of rain, the water level of slough has risen and salmon has been making progress to complete their journey. It's amazing that they travel through such different ecosystems to complete their life cycle. Welcome back!
