"Fifty years ago, on April 22, 1969, the Black and Puerto Rican Student Community of City College convened in the wee hours of the morning to lock the gates of the South Campus, shutting out students, faculty, and staff with the purpose of eradicating racial disparity at CCNY.”

Yacine Diouf is a senior at CCNY studying International Studies and Business Management with a minor in Public Policy. Having always been extremely active on campus, her experiences and leadership led Yacine to serve as a delegate for CCNY at the African Development Conference at Harvard. As a descendant of a long line of strong women, having a seat the table means being heard and affecting change, “My grandmother who had only girls taught my mother who had only girls that we deserve just as much as any man, but with our society we will have to work 3 times as hard to have it.”

Jasmine Salcedo is the Gender Resources Social Worker at CCNY, a program that launched in 2016 to establish a safe environment for students of all identities and expressions. A proud CUNY alum, Jasmine received her Master of Social Work from Hunter College. Overall, she strives to nurture and support all CCNY students.

Abigail Jean Francois is a Childhood Education and Psychology major. In addition to being a full time student, Abigail started her own makeup brand. For her, having a seat at the table means “my words or my actions have meaning, has credibility, it has some sort of importance to whatever it is we are trying to build.” •
Next, Yingli Tian is a professor in CCNY’s Department of Electrical Engineering. Dr. Tian is a world-leading expert in computer vision and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. For her, having a seat at the table means being persistent and speaking up. Im 2019, Dr. Tian hopes to see more women become involved in STEM and become more represented at that table. •

Together, Mia Lian Chin and Shelly Zhou founded Humanizing, a service club dedicated to de-stigmatizing homelessness in NYC. •
Mia is a junior pursuing a dual degree in biology and anthropology. Her idea of taking a seat at the table is redefining the notions of leadership, “Our perceptions of ‘leadership’ are often riddled with connotations of masculinity and abrasiveness...As millennials, I think many of us would like to believe we are above these antiquated ideas.”

Shelly is a third-year student studying biology. She is going to use her seat at the table to make a difference and give voices to other under-represented people, “Through my seat at the table, I hope to always listen to what people have to say and accurately speak for them.”
