2018 FIBA World Cup: D’Tigress to arrive Lagos on Monday.
The Women’s Senior National Basketball team will arrive Lagos, Nigeria in the early hours of Monday for the next phase of their 2018 FIBA Women’s World cup in Spain.

After weeks of training in Atlanta, the team led by Otis Hughley will have their last training in the United States of America on Saturday before their departure on Sunday.

According to the information made available by the Technical crew through Assistant Coach, Peter Ahmedu, 1 more player will be dropped from the 14 in camp before their departure. “Presently, we have 14 players including Adaora Elonu who has been drafted by Atlanta Dreams. We will reduce to 13 players before we leave for Lagos. We will be able to drop 1 more player because we have 3 players (Uju Favour Ugoka, Akaraiwe Nkem and Nkechi Akashili) back home for the next phase of our preparation.” Commenting on life under the new coach, Peter said the team has completely settled in and are now focused on the task ahead.

Coach Ahmedu described the experience so far as wonderful as he remains optimistic that it will translate to a good outing at the world cup. “The adjustment has been so tremendous. The players are adjusting day by day while the team chemistry has continued to improve. By the time we round off here on Saturday, we would have been able to achieve our set goal.” Peter revealed that having spent more than 2 weeks with the team, the players are now on the same page with the new coach. “Coach Otis came with different dynamics and techniques both offense and defense which has actually helped the team. He has seen the energy and ability of the girls and we have been able to adjust.” The current African Champions will start training on Tuesday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos.

The Nigeria Basketball Federation has signed a 2 year contract with Total E&P Nigeria Limited worth sixty million for the National Divisions 1 and 2 leagues.

The deal has been described by the President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Engr. Musa Ah Kida as a unique breakthrough for the domestic league in the history of Nigerian Basketball. “This partnership with Total E&P Nigeria Limited is in fulfillment of one of my cardinal objectives as the president of the federation. “One of my cardinal goals and objectives as President of NBBF is to take basketball to the grassroots, so that our Youths and other stakeholders of the game who have been neglected for so long would have the opportunity of competing effectively right in their backyards.” The contract between NBBF and Total marks a significant beginning in the development of basketball in the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). “The NBBF board has decided to formulate a new league format for the lower divisions to maximize the likely benefits thereof, as we work around the clock to deliver on our promise of securing a better life for players and officials who are the major actors in our quest to take basketball to its desired level." Engr Kida thanked the new sponsor for the hand of fellowship extended to the federation in the past when they hosted the D’Tigeress and D’Tigers after their 2017 FIBA Afrobasket exploits.

He applauded Total’s commitment to sponsor the National Divisions 1 and 2 leagues which again affirms the love the company has for Nigerian sports. “This commitment which underscores the importance the company attaches to its Corporate Social Responsibility is geared towards uplifting the Nigerian youths is an epoch event in the annals of Nigerian Basketball because it is the first time the federation is securing sponsorship for any of its lower leagues”, Kida said.
