12 October / Feast Day: St Pope John Paul II (JPII) // Born Karol Józef Wojtyła in Wadowice, Poland, he was elected Pope on 16 October 1978. During his papacy, he wrote principal documents including 14 Encyclicals, 15 Apostolic Exhortations, 11 Apostolic Constitutions and 45 Apostolic Letters, plus five books. JPII met millions of the faithful in the course of his pastoral visits in Italy and throughout the world. He attracted young people by beginning the celebration of World Youth Day in 1986. An attempt was made on JPII’s life in Saint Peter’s square on 3 May, 1981. Saved by the maternal hand of the Mother, and a lengthy stay in hospital, he forgave the attempted assassin and intensified his pastoral commitments with generosity. JPII was a man of peace and compassion. Inspired by the same Spirit, may we continue and follow in the footsteps of JPII. .

St Pope John Paul II, pray for us!

On October 18, @acn_international acn_international encouraged children all over her world to pray the rosary for peace in the world. Prayers are offered up for those suffering in war-torn Syria. Whether your young or old, it's not too late, it's 9am somewhere in the world, right? So say a rosary for peace as Our Mother also requested!

17 October / FEAST DAY: St Ignatius of Antioch // The disciple of St John the Apostle, and consecrated as the second Bishop of Antioch, Syria, by our first pope, St Peter the Apostle. He always made it his special care to defend "orthodoxy" (right teaching) and "orthopraxy" (right practice) among the early Christians. He was wrongfully sentenced to death during the reign of Emperor Trajan, because he refused to renounce the Christian faith. He travelled to Asia Minor and Greece and made good use of his time writing seven letters of encouragement, instructions no inspiration to Christians in those communities. He was taken under guard to Rome and brutally devoured by wild beasts in a public spectacle. In his pastoral letters, he regularly thanked his brother and sister Christians for their concern for his wellbeing but insisted on following through in his final witness of fidelity: "... I would rather die and come to Jesus Christ than be king over the entire earth. Him I seek who died for us; him I love who rose again because of us." St Ignatius of Antioch, pray for us!

Fr Willie Lee: "I can be preaching about love and reconciliation from the pulpit every Sunday, but if I am not practising it then I feel myself that it's nothing." .

Today marks the Centenary of The Final Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. Our Lady appeared to three young children on the 13th of every month from May to October in 1917, except for in August (where she appeared on the 19th). She revealed to the children a three-part secret during the apparition on July 13 which foretold the persecution of Christians in the 20th Century. You can read more about the Centenary of Fatima in the special coverage we're doing in this weekend's edition of The Catholic Leader 📰

Pope Francis tweeted, "The Rosary is a synthesis of the mysteries of Christ; we contemplate them with Mary, who allows us to see with her eyes of faith and love"

4 October / FEAST DAY: St Francis of Assisi // 3 facts about St Francis:
1. Born Giovanni di Petro di Bernardoni and renamed Francesco because his father was a merchant who liked French culture. Francesco means 'Frenchman'
2. Francis' reasoning: what could you do to a man who owns nothing? You can't starve a fasting man, you can't steal from someone who has no money, you can't ruin someone who hates prestige. Touché St Francis!
3. He received the stigmata during a 40-day fast in preparation for Michaelmas (Feast Day of St Michael the Archangel - observed on 29 Sept)
What an absolute character!
St Francis, we look to you as a model of love, simplicity and practice of poverty, help us to detach from things of the world and pray that we may have the grace to understand others as we wish to be understood, love as to be loved and pardon as we wish to be pardoned, for it is in giving that we truly receive. St Francis of Assisi, pray for us!

29 Sept / Feast Day: St Michael and the Archangels // On the feast day of the archangels, we remember that God’s messengers guide us in our journey to everlasting life with our Father. We can pray to Michael when we face temptation. We can ask to Gabriel to help us say “yes” to God as Mary did so many years ago. We can pray to Raphael when we are ill or know someone who is in need of healing. We honor the archangels as saints. They remind us that God is always with us and that God loves so much that he also gives us special helpers to light and guide us to him.
