Happy Pentecost! .
In the Christian tradition, Pentecost is the celebration of the person of the Holy Spirit coming upon the Apostles, Mary, and the first followers of Jesus, who were gathered together in the Upper Room.
.
The Holy Spirit gave the apostles the gifts and fruits necessary to fulfill the great commission - to go out and preach the Gospel to all nations. It fulfills the New Testament promise from Christ (Luke 24:46-49) that the Apostles would be “clothed with power” before they would be sent out to spread the Gospel.
.
It was right after Pentecost that Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, preached his first homily to Jews and other non-believers. He tells the people that the Jesus they crucified is the Lord and was raised from the dead, which “cuts them to the heart.” When they asked what they should do, Peter exhorts them to repent of their sins and to be baptised. According to the account in Acts, about 3,000 people were baptised following Peter’s sermon. .
For this reason, Pentecost is considered the birthday of the Church - Peter, the first Pope, preaches for the first time and converts thousands of new believers. The apostles and believers, for the first time, were united by a common language, and a common zeal and purpose to go and preach the Gospel.

Three churches in Indonesia’s second-largest city of Surabaya were targeted on Sunday 13 May, leaving at least 13 people dead and 40 people wounded.
.
Pope Francis offered his prayers for the victims and the country,
.
“I am particular close to the fear people of Indonesia, in a special way to the Christian communities of the city of Surabaya, which were hit hard by the serious attack on places of worship. Together we invoke the God of peace, that He might bring these violent actions to an end; and that in the hearts of all, space might be found for feelings, not of hatred and violence, but of reconciliation and fraternity.”
.
Let us join the Holy Father’s prayer for peace and healing for those affected by the recent events. #prayforsurabaya

FEAST DAY / St Joseph The Worker // St Joseph embodies the Christian spirit that should permeate in one’s work. He was a working man who became the foster-Father of Chist; there is a special dignity and value to the work done in caring for the family.
.
The Office of Readings contains an excerpt from the Vatican II document on the Church in the modern world: “Where men and women, in the course of gaining a livelihood for themselves and their families, offer appropriate service to society, for themselves and their families, offer appropriate service to society, they can be confident that their personal efforts promote the work of the Creator, confer benefits on their fellowmen, and help to realize God’s plan in history” (no. 34).
.
PRAYER: Joseph, by the work of your hands and the sweat of your brow,
you supported Jesus and Mary,
and had the Son of God as your fellow worker.
.

Teach me to work as you did,
with patience and perseverance, for God and for those whom God has given me to support.
Teach me to see in my fellow workers
the Christ who desires to be in them,
that I may always be charitable and forbearing towards all.
.
Grant me to look upon work
with the eyes of faith, so that I shall recognize in it my share in God’s own creative activity and in Christ’s work of our redemption, and so take pride in it.
.
When it is pleasant and productive,
remind me to give thanks to God for it.
And when it is burdensome,
teach me to offer it to God, in reparation for my sins and the sins of the world.
Amen.

Australia’s saint turned Margaret Hatzis’ grief into joy with music //
.
It was 2008 and as Marget Hatzis was surrounded only by candlelight, she looked at the holy tomb and realised her entire life – literally from the moment she was born – had been shaped by the then soon-to-be saint.
.

Filled with grief from her mum’s sudden death, an unexpected thing happened. “In my grief and making connections and trying to find a way to find joy again, this music started,” Margaret said.
.

Margaret would be on a walk and, out of nowhere, a tune would pop into her head. None of the songs were ever planned, but they were always the fruit of prayer.
.

She always prayed for help from Mary MacKillop and the Holy Spirit. “It definitely came from a prayerful space,” Margaret said. “I believe that’s the way music comes, as an inspiration from the Holy Spirit, from that deep spiritual place.”
