On this day in 2000, “In the beginning” was penned to start the creation of The St. John’s Bible call 314-373-8205 to learn how to experience the Bible and it’s illuminations today

O holy Child of Bethlehem! Descend to us we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come with us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

A blessed, peaceful, and Merry Christmas from the Cathedral Basilica.
There's still time to join us for Mass today: 10:00am & 12:00 Noon

November 2: The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls)

Today we pray for the repose of the souls.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

The annual Priests Purgatorial Mass was held today.
Additionally, a Book of Remembrance is in our All Souls Chapel through the month of November. You are welcome to inscribe names of loved ones in the book to be remembered.
Also-a look at our All Souls Chapel today and from a much earlier time.

Pictured here are views of our All Saints Chapel & its corresponding ambulatory. Stop by the chapel and take a look at the Gospel and Acts volume of the Saint John's Bible, too! Docents for the Saint John's Bible will resume on November 2 from 9:30-11:45am and 1:00-3:00pm. No rsvp needed to view the Bible.
And, for good measure, an oldie but goodie from our Cathedral Archives, circa late 1920s-early 1930s. Check out the cars, too!

#Fall is officially here. #catholicstl #STL #stlwx

103 years ago today, October 18, 1914, on the Feast of St. Luke, the initial Mass of the Cathedral was celebrated. It was also the sixth anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone. The initial Mass was celebrated by Bishop John J. Hennessy, former pastor of Saint John's Pro-Cathedral in St. Louis. Bishop Hennessy had become the first bishop of Wichita in 1889.
This great historical picture was shared by SLU Archives earlier this week and is circa 1909-1910. (This is the east side of the Cathedral, facing Newstead Avenue)
