Training your dog is such an important part of pet ownership, we want to share a bit about the tools we use to train our dogs.

We've been working on sit/stay, lie/stay, stand/stay with Mowgli, he knows and understands it so now it's sharpening the behavior as well as getting longer holds in higher distraction areas, like a park with other dogs walking around and playing.

This is a key behavior I want solid for herding, when setting your dog up, your dog needs to hold a sit/stay until you can get to your sheep, it takes a lot of self-control on the dog’s part - even though they are in a fun working environment they still have to listen and play by the rules.

Who knew our portable cot would come in so handy when we are out training, it gives him a perimeter to work in, I don't care if he shifts or goes from a sit to a down, as long as he doesn't move from the spot I placed him (his cot), a perfect tool to add to your training toolbox.

Have you ever found an unlikely tool for training, what was it and how did it work of you?

We thank you so much for following along, and as we end our takeover, make sure to come back tomorrow to enter our giveaway for a @carlsonpetproducts portable dog cot + a $25 gift card to Petco!

The @thebeauceronboys back again to talk about the best ways to keep your dog stimulated.

I try and stay as active as I can with Atreyu & Mowgli, we don't make it out for a grand adventure or herding every day so I'll share a few things that keep the boys physically and mentally worked on an average day at home.

Atreyu joins me a few times a week for early morning runs, Mowgli doesn't get to join in on these often since he's still younger and larger breeds shouldn't be running until they are at least 18 months, gives their body time to mature.

A few walks a day, frisbee for Atreyu, flirt pole for Mowgli, short obedience training sessions thrown in here and there and one of my favorites, hide and seek of treats all around the house.

I'll put the boys outside while I hide their food or treats in different spots all over the house, I let them in and tell them to "find it" they both love this game, I usually do 2-3 rounds and find different spots each time.

Do you have a favorite way to exercise your dog at home

Living in the city it can be hard to find a place to take your dog to see if they have the instinct to herd. So how do you get started? Google is going to be your best bet for what might be offered in your area. You'll want to find a facility that offers an "instinct test".

This will be an informal test with your dog. Before the test, you will want your dog to be able to sit or stop and have a recall. When adding a high distraction like large, smart animals (yes, sheep are smart) can have you questioning the most obedient dog.

Bring a longline, a flat collar, wear pants and closed toed shoes, you'll most likely enter a smaller arena with the instructor (some facilities are different and the instructor might be the only one to take your dog in).

For the test: you'll drop the longline and see how your dog reacts, the instructor will have a herding stick or paddle to help guide around or cut them off when they get too close. You'll be asked to have your dog stop, they don't have to sit or lie down, just stop when asked, you will recall your dog and exit the arena.

If your dog showed interest, was able to move the flock around in a calmer fashion without diving in or biting the sheep, showed enough interest that the instructor thinks there is potential you'll be able to start lessons. Some places will even give a paper stating your dog has instincts to pursue herding.

Herding is not strictly for only herding breeds, don't think just because you don't have a herding breed you can't try it out. We love it because it's great mental and physical work for your dog. Be prepared to pay anywhere from $25-$50 for a 30-60-minute lesson, it's a pricey but rewarding sport.
Have you done herding? Is herding something you think your dog would be interested in?

Join us for the next couple of days as we take over @Carlsonpetproducts account.

We are @thebeauceronboys – and we love to herd sheep.

The act of bringing individual animals together into a group, maintaining, the group, and moving the group from place, this is herding. The boys both love herding and I love watching them work in the purpose they were bred for.

The Beauceron breed is an ancient herding dog from France, dating back as early as the 1500s. They are a large, powerful breed not for the faint of heart.

Atreyu is 2 years old and Mowgli just turned 1.
We have been herding for over a year now and are always learning something new, follow along for the next two days as we share what we've learned and how you can get your dog started in herding too.

** As a bonus -- at the end of our two day takeover we will be giving away a favorite training tool, the @carlsonpetproducts portable dog cot + a $25 gift card to Petco! **
