Cam Woodsum  Nomad. Entrepreneur. Impact Focused. Founder @fanbump Now: Playa del Carmen 🇲🇽 My Life Story 👇

"You are what you do, not what you say you'll do." -Carl Gustav Jung⠀
.⠀
I've been traveling with a drone in my bag for the last two years but I've barely flown it. Changing that starting today with this aerial shot of where I'm living in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.⠀
.⠀
I fundamentally believe that the more you can reduce the gap between your thoughts and your actions, the more fulfilling your life will be. In other words, aligning the actions that you think you should take with the actions that you actually take.⠀
.⠀
Being action oriented is one of my greatest strengths but it's also an area where I have a lot of room for growth and am actively trying to improve.
.⠀
If you're looking to make big, positive changes in your life then try deepening your alignment between your thoughts and your actions.⠀
.⠀
Also, if you don't see more drone shots in the near future then please call me out!⠀

There's something magical about living near the ocean and not being in a city. I grew up in a major city but since I started nomading two years ago, I've noticed that I'm much more productive, happy and mentally clear when I'm in lower key environments.⠀
.⠀
The sweet spot for me is places that don't have the hecticness of a city but do have the constant flow of new people and nightlife. You pretty much only find this combination in tourist hotspots (Bali, Chiang Mai, and here in Playa del Carmen, Mexico).⠀
.⠀
If you haven't ever experimented with living outside of a city (or outside of the U.S.), I highly recommend it!⠀
.⠀
And if you've spent time location hacking to find your optimal environment then I'd love to hear about it.⠀

Sunset in South Florida 🇺🇲. Haven't posted in a while but I'm back! Just shared a full life update at camwoodsum.com.

There are more people getting paid off their looks today than ever before - and this is going to have major societal ramifications in the short and long term. Instagram created this trend and it's now on an unstoppable path forward.⠀
.⠀
Similar to how Facebook has created major societal changes that couldn't have been predicted, Instagram is well on its way to changing the way that humans value themselves and their peers.⠀
.⠀
And while Twitter has major problems of its own, in many ways I wish Twitter had become the dominant platform because it rewards people for how they think, not how they look or the life that they're portraying online.⠀
.⠀
The compounding issue here is that with the overall rise of technology (plus the rise of AI) we're only at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to monumental shifts (that arguably aren't for the better).⠀
.⠀
What are your thoughts on the rise of technology and how it will shape society? Would be curious to hear your thoughts.⠀

The hardest thing about learning new things. I believe that learning new things is a skill, not a gift. And this is a "muscle" that I've worked very hard at training over the last year and a half.⠀
.⠀
Since the beginning of 2017 I've learned how to: start businesses while traveling, build websites, write on a consistent basis, grow an Instagram following, meditate consistently, become a "not bad" dancer, shed my fear of cold approaching people and much more.⠀
.⠀
What I’ve come to believe is that the hardest thing about learning or doing anything new is taking the first step and then being consistent. Doing something new always seems harder than it actually is because we fear the unknown. And the ambiguity always makes starting out a daunting task.⠀
.⠀
But if we muster up the courage to take the first step and persevere until the ambiguousness fades, then the new skill or experience shifts to something tangible. And once we get over the hump and feel like we're no longer a beginner or bad at something, then the path to becoming “not bad" is much clearer and easier.⠀
.⠀
The hardest part is always taking the first step and then being consistent! So don’t wait for the perfect time or moment, jump in now and commit to learning until the ambiguousness of that new skill/concept fades.⠀

How you start a relationship is how it will always be. This is a simple lesson but it took me about eight years of starting businesses and dating to fully learn this.⠀
.⠀
The lesson is that whatever the dynamic is of your relationship with your business partner or significant other in the first few months, is how it will be forever. This is a slight oversimplification because relationships evolve but I firmly believe that the foundation is hard to change if you don't get it right in the beginning.⠀
.⠀
The simplest example of this in a romantic relationship is if the man pays for the first few dates instead of splitting the checks, the man will likely pay for the relationship forever. Because if you establish that as the norm then your partner will view that as part of your dynamic together.⠀
.⠀
And in business, if you establish your co-founder dynamic as one of equality instead of one with a clear leader, then at scale that dynamic will hold true.⠀
.⠀
I like to think of relationships as buildings in the sense that you start by building a foundation and then over time you build more and more stories. Once you've built a tall building with someone, it's incredibly hard to go back and change the foundation.⠀
.⠀
I've learned to think long and hard about the dynamic that I want in business and romantically before engaging in a potential relationship because of this lesson.⠀
.⠀

I now have a deep, negative reaction to successful influencers who use money and flashiness to appeal to mass audiences. Tai Lopez and hip hop music are the best examples of this.⠀
.⠀
This perpetuates society's training that money is what we should all be striving for (when we really should just be trying to figure out how to be happy!).⠀
.⠀
I'm guilty of managing a hip hop artist who rapped about money so I certainly don't have clean hands here (but he was broke and most people probably knew that, so maybe it's okay?).⠀
.⠀
I made the shift in 2017 from viewing money as a way to directly increase my quality of life (by spending money on nicer things), to viewing money as a tool to create personal freedom and world impact. What I mean is I shifted to living a minimalistic lifestyle where money beyond a certain level doesn't serve any purpose in improving my life - but it does serve as a tool to create greater world impact and change.⠀
.⠀
If you can re-wire your brain to disassociate things and happiness then it will change how you view the world and your life journey. The easiest shortcut is to go travel cheaply in places with a low cost of living and very happy people (Bali, Chiang Mai, Vietnam, Medellin, etc).⠀
.⠀
Agree? Disagree? Would love to hear your thoughts.⠀

The barrier to working online and traveling the world has exponentially decreased over the last few years. And this shift will continue to happen at a rapid rate.⠀
.⠀
There are a number of compounding forces behind this: the rise of apps that make traveling to foreign places easier (notably Uber and airbnb), the rise of information about working and traveling (notably nomadlist and christhefreelancer), the rise of remote jobs and freelance opportunities (notably upwork and sites like jobspresso), the rise of technology that makes remote work easier (slack, Trello, smartphones, good wifi and 4g all over the world), and the rise of people sharing how interesting this lifestyle is!⠀
.⠀
If you're interested in working while traveling the world, I would encourage you to check the link in my bio about this (not something I make money from, just a helpful resource!). It's much easier and attainable than most people realize.⠀

Living Somewhere Where The Locals Don't Speak English Is Easier Than You Think. The idea of living in a place where people don't speak your language may feel a bit terrifying but it's actually not all that hard.⠀
.⠀
The most important point is that with a sim card, Google translate, and Google maps, you can communicate with anyone and navigate anywhere. Beyond that, I've become used to stopping random people on the street to translate street signs or menus, and people tend to be happy to help!⠀
.⠀
One of my favorite stories is that when I lived in Taipei last year, I ordered some exercise bands off of the local Amazon equivalent. The next day, a delivery driver, who didn't speak English, called me and started speaking a mile a minute in Mandarin.⠀
.⠀
After thinking about what to do, I ran across the street into a restaurant, bolted up to the hostess, and asked her, "hey, do you speak English?"⠀
"A little bit," she responded, which is code for I'm fluent, because Taiwanese people are humble.⠀
"Perfect. Can you tell this delivery driver to deliver my package across the street?" I blurted while handing her my cell phone.⠀
.⠀
She had a slightly confused look on her face but she took the phone, and after a few minutes of speaking to the driver she informed me that my package would be delivered in 30 minutes. I thanked her profusely, we shared a laugh and then I went on my way!⠀
.⠀
The moral of the story here is that if you really need help (especially in cultures where kindness is a core value) you'll be shocked at how helpful other humans will be. And this simple fact, combined with the power of technology, makes living in places where not all of the locals speak English very doable.⠀
.⠀
If you have a similar story then I'd love to hear it!⠀

Throwback to the days when I used to manage hip-hop artists #moufy. Don't miss that world but wouldn't trade that experience for anything. Here are the 6 lessons that managing hip-hop artists taught me about life and business:⠀
.⠀
1. You can learn anything that you put your mind to: The easiest way to learn something new is to carefully observe those who do it best and start by doing what they’re doing until you come up with your own philosophy⠀
.⠀
2. Stand your ground when you’re challenged: Many people take this philosophy too far and seek out fights. I’ve incorporated this into my life in the sense that there are certain ethical/respect/value lines that I do not let people cross.⠀
.⠀
3. How to spot liars and the value of loyalty: Relationships are built on loyalty and trust.⠀
.⠀
4. Hard Work x Passion x Relentlessness x Opportunity = Success: Success is a relative term here because we were ultimately unsuccessful. But we put in a ton of hours and saw the output match the input of our effort and desire to win.⠀
.⠀
5. You don’t have to follow business conventions or advice: At the root of our early success was doing things in unorthodox ways and ignoring the advice of tenured music industry folks.⠀
.⠀
6. Relying on someone else for your own success is a powerless feeling: This is a lesson that I learned in talent management and learned again while working in the startup industry. If you’re a high ownership person then not being in control can be excruciating.
