#MakeADifferenceMonday Joyce Quon, a sophomore biochem major, has volunteered 150 hours and counting in the Maternity Unit of Huntington Hospital in Pasadena. “I love connecting with new mothers on an emotional level and ensuring that their experiences are the best they can be," she says.
"I remember meeting a woman who had just had her first baby boy. She said that she felt like she had nobody to celebrate with because her parents and closest friends were in Hong Kong. Because she knew very little English, I chatted with her in Cantonese for an hour. She told me all about how she moved to California, how she was adjusting to life away from her family and friends, and how she was relieved that she had delivered without issues. I still remember how she felt so happy that she connected with me.”
“We volunteers get more out of it than we give. It's fulfilling to be part of a movement to give back to the community and make a difference for the people around you.”
